A milling tool assembly has a replaceable cutter and a reusable shank connected to the cutter with a detachable joint. The joint may be, for example, a threaded connection. An intermediate alignment sleeve made of an elastic or semi-elastic material, is positioned between the cutter and the shank about the axis of rotation of the shank.

A face milling cutter has a shank portion adjoining a cutting portion. The cutting portion terminates in a plurality of cutting edges extending in a radial direction from a central axis of the face milling cutter. The cutting edges are convexly curved at least along a part of their length. A portion of the cutting edges proximate the central axis is nearer in an axial direction to the shank portion than a point, X, on the cutting edges that is farthest away from the shank portion. A distance Y, between the point, X, and the central axis is between 20% and 40% of a diameter, D, of the face milling cutter, and a central portion extends the distance, Y, and has a radius of curvature of about 110% of the diameter, D.

A center or non-center cutting end mill for orbital drilling includes a shank having a shank diameter; a neck having a neck diameter; a cutting head having a cutting diameter; a corner radius; a dish angle; and a longitudinal axis, the cutting head including a forward cutting end having a convexly curved section located between the longitudinal axis and the corner radius, wherein the convexly curved section causes material removed from a workpiece to flow radially outward from an initial contact area toward the corner radius, thereby minimizing the accumulation of material in a central portion of the forward cutting end.
