Passive acoustic sensors having at least two flat parallel acoustically reflecting surfaces. At least one reflecting surface is on a member which is movable such that the distance between the reflecting surfaces varies as a function of a physical variable to be determined. Preferably, the sensor is made such that the intensity of a first portion of incident acoustic waves which is reflected from one reflecting surface is equal or substantially similar to the intensity of a second portion of the incident acoustic waves which is reflected from the other reflecting surface. The first portion and the second portion interfere to form a returning acoustic signal having one or more maximally attenuated frequencies which is correlated with the value of the physical variable. The internal acoustic signal is received and processed to determine the value of the physical variable from one or more of the maximal attenuation frequencies. Methods and systems for using the passive sensors are disclosed.

Passive ultrasonic sensors, methods and systems for their use

A device for moving a fluid in a fluidics system. The device may include one or more controllably openable closed chambers. The pressure within the closed chamber(s) is lower than the ambient pressure outside the fluidics system or lower than the pressure within another channel of the fluidic system. The closed chamber(s) is configured for being controllably opened. The chamber (or chambers) is configured such that when a chamber is opened the chamber is in fluidic communication with a flow channel included within the fluidics system. The fluid may be moved into the flow channel or may be moved within the flow channel. The fluid may be a liquid, a gas, a mixture of gases or an aerosol. The fluidics system may include a controller for controlling the opening of a selected chamber or chambers.

Apparatus, and method for propelling fluids

A passive sensor system utilizing ultrasonic energy is disclosed. The passive sensor system includes at least one ultrasonically vibratable sensor and an ultrasonic activation and detection system. The sensor has at least one vibration frequency which is a function of a physical variable to be sensed. The ultrasonic activation and detection system excites the sensor and detects the vibration frequency from which it determines a value of the physical variable. The sensor includes a substrate having at least one cavity therein, and a vibratable membrane overlying the cavity. Another preferred embodiment of the sensor is a compensated sensor pair including a first sensor whose vibration frequency is responsive to the physical variable to be sensed, and a second sensor whose vibration frequency is non-responsive to the physical variable to be sensed. The second sensor provides a reference vibration frequency for compensating for the effect of other physical variables on the vibration frequency of the first sensor. Another preferred embodiment of the compensated sensor pair includes a second sensor which has a different response characteristic than that of the first sensor to the physical variable to be sensed. In still another preferred embodiment of the compensated sensor of the present invention each of the pair of sensors has multiple vibratable membranes overlying multiple cavities.

Passive sensor system using ultrasonic energy

A passive sensor system utilizing ultrasonic energy is disclosed. The passive sensor system includes at least one ultrasonically vibratable sensor and an ultrasonic activation and detection system. The sensor has at least one vibration frequency which is a function of a physical variable to be sensed. The ultrasonic activation and detection system excites the sensor and detects the vibration frequency from which it determines a value of the physical variable. The sensor includes a housing, a membrane which is attached to the housing and which is responsive to the physical variable, a vibratable beam attached to the housing at one end and a coupler, attached to the membrane and to a small portion of the vibratable beam, which bends the vibratable beam in response to movement of the membrane.
