A method of controlling a mobile device is described, the method comprising: receiving a time varying current or voltage of a signal generated on the terminals of an acoustic transducer of the mobile device, the time varying current or voltage being generated in response to a tapping and/or sliding motion on a surface of the mobile device performed by a user; comparing the time varying signal characteristics with a set of predetermined signal characteristics; and generating at least one user command in dependence of the comparison. The mobile device may reliably detect complex user commands using an acoustic transducer.

Method of controlling a mobile device

A voice activation system is described including a first voice activity detector for receiving a first signal from a microphone; a second voice activity detector for receiving a second signal from a speaker; a voice detector output coupled to the output of the first voice activity detector and the second voice activity detector. The first detector and the second detector are operable to generate an output signal in response to a candidate speech signal received on the respective detector inputs and the voice activation system is configured to generate a voice detector output signal when at least one of the first detector output and the second detector output indicate that speech has been detected. The voice activation system may reduce the average power consumption and increase the recognition rate of an always-on voice activation solution for headsets or other mobile audio devices.

Voice activation system

A system for producing a mechanical haptic pattern based on linear resonance actuator (LRA) signal is disclosed. The system includes an actuator displacement sensor, the actuator displacement sensor configured to apply an alternating measurement signal at a predetermined frequency to an actuator motor. The actuator displacement sensor configured to use a measure of a voltage across and a current through the actuator motor to determine its impedance at the predetermined frequency and determine an estimated displacement of the actuator motor using said impedance and a predetermined displacement-impedance function. The system also includes a controller configured to accept the LRA signal and the estimated displacement, wherein the controller is configured to alter the input LRA signal according to the estimated displacement to limit excursion of a moving part of the actuator motor.

Multi-tone haptic pattern generator

A circuit and method for determining an ambient temperature for an electronic device having a loudspeaker are described. An amplifier drives the loudspeaker and first circuitry is configure to determine an overall temperature of the loudspeaker or the amplifier. Second circuitry is configured to determine a change in temperature of the loudspeaker or the amplifier resulting from power dissipated in the loudspeaker or the amplifier. Third circuitry is configured to subtract a signal representative of the change in temperature from a signal representative of the overall temperature and output a signal representative of the ambient temperature for the electronic device.

Temperature sensing

An audio processing system and method are described. A microphone is arranged to generate a microphone output signal responsive to an acoustic input. A speaker is arranged to generate an acoustic output responsive to a speaker input signal and to generate a speaker output signal responsive to the acoustic input. A wind noise detector is arranged to receive and process the microphone output signal and/or the speaker output signal to detect wind noise. A signal processor is arranged to receive the microphone output signal and is configured to process the speaker output signal when wind noise has been detected. The microphone output signal is modified using a result of processing the speaker output signal to reduce the amount of wind noise in a processed audio signal output by the signal processor.

Audio system and method

A voice coil motor displacement sensor and a voice coil motor controller that uses said sensor. The sensor configured to apply an alternating measurement signal at a predetermined frequency to a voice coil motor, the sensor configured to use a measure of a voltage across and a current through the voice coil motor to determine its impedance at the predetermined frequency and determine an estimated displacement of said voice coil motor using said impedance and a predetermined displacement-impedance function.

One example discloses an acoustic pairing device, comprising: an acoustic processor configured to receive a first acoustic signal and a second acoustic signal; a signal comparison module configured to identify a propagation delay or amplitude difference between the first and second acoustic signals; and a pairing module configured to output a pairing signal if the propagation delay or amplitude difference is between a first value and a second value. Another example discloses a method for acoustic pairing between a first device and a second device, executed by a computer programmed with non-transient executable instructions, comprising: receiving a propagation delay or amplitude difference between a first acoustic signal and a second acoustic signal; pairing the first and second devices if the propagation delay or amplitude difference is between a first value and a second value.

Acoustic pairing

Existing ANC headsets have active noise reduction circuitry and a power supply in the headset. Alternate ANC headsets rely on ANC circuitry in the player and have non-standard connectors meaning that they cannot be used with any other players. An audio headset () having an encoder () and active noise cancellation audio processing device () having a decoder () are described. The encoder () enables the audio headset to be used in enhanced (ANC) mode when connected to a compatible audio processing device and in normal mode when connected to a non-compatible audio processing device since a standard audio jack plug can be used. Similarly the decoder () in the active noise cancellation audio processing device () enables the active noise cancellation audio processing device to be used in enhanced mode when connected to a compatible audio headset and in normal mode connected to a non-compatible audio headset since a standard audio socket can be used.
