A method for locating concentration of mobile radio (MR) traffic in a coverage area by identifying the locations where MRs ( ) in the coverage area are actively making calls. Signal strength measurements at test sites ( ) of interest within the coverage area ( ) are made and compared with signal strength measurements taken from operating MRs ( ). A plot of matches can be kept and used to traffic the locations within the coverage area ( ) revealing where concentrations in the coverage area ( ) exist.

System and method for profiling the location of mobile radio traffic in a wireless communications network

The present invention is a system and method to provide a scientific and quantitative measurement in finding optimal locations for placing new micro or pico cells. Signal strength information of a test transmitter measured by mobile stations is reported to a base station serving a macro cell via call quality messages that the mobile stations are located. A post-processing tool counts the number of call quality messages having a signal strength level measured from the test transmitter above a threshold during a measuring period indicating that a call can be offloaded to the new micro or pico cell. The estimated offloaded traffic volume is then calculated, preferably in Erlangs.

System and method for identifying hot spots in the D-AMPS wireless system

A combination mobile station and cordless wireline cordless base station, each having a different directory number, includes a mobile station that functions in a wireless network as a typical wireless unit. When the mobile station is within radio range of the wireline cordless base station, it retunes its operating frequency to that of the wireline cordless base station. The wireline cordless base station, when it senses that the mobile station is within radio range, notifies the wireless network of the wireline directory number of the wireline cordless base station. When the wireless network receives a call for the mobile station, it forwards the call to the wireline cordless base station over the wireline network. When the mobile station is moved out of radio range of the cordless wireline cordless base station, the mobile station returns to the operating frequency of the wireless network, and the wireline cordless base station informs the wireless network that it is no longer receiving calls for that mobile station.
