A method for operating an electric submersible pumping system includes the steps of operating the electric submersible pumping system until it reaches a steady state operating condition, obtaining a first internal motor temperature measurement, obtaining a first external motor temperature measurement, and determining a first temperature differential based on the difference between the first internal motor temperature measurement and the first external motor temperature measurement. The method continues with the steps of obtaining a second internal motor temperature measurement, obtaining a second external motor temperature measurement, and determining a second temperature differential based on the difference between the second internal motor temperature measurement and the second external motor temperature measurement. Next the method includes the steps of comparing the second temperature differential to the first temperature differential, and indicating a probability of scale accumulation on the electric motor if the second temperature differential is greater than the first temperature differential.

An electric submersible pumping system includes a motor, a pump driven by the motor, and a cable that provides electrical power to the motor. The cable includes a conductor and an insulator surrounding the conductor. The insulator includes a first layer surrounding the conductor and a second layer surrounding the first layer. The insulator may include an HS scavenger and an HS reactant in the first or second layers surrounding the conductor. The cable optionally includes a sub-insulator layer that includes a metal or nitride coating applied directly to the conductor.

Advanced insulation and jacketing for downhole power and motor lead cables

A well pump assembly has a pump housing with an intake member. A barrel has a barrel head secured to and extending downward from the intake member. A plunger is reciprocally carried in the barrel bore. An intake passage extends coaxially in the intake member and the barrel head into the barrel bore above the plunger. An intake port extends from an exterior of the intake member to the intake passage. A nozzle is secured within in the intake passage. The nozzle has an orifice passage with a downward converging section extending downward to a constant diameter section. The constant diameter section has a smaller diameter than the intake passage.

A submersible well pump assembly has a pump housing with a pump discharge on upper end. A pump barrel is located within the pump housing, defining an annular passage between the barrel and the pump housing. A plunger is reciprocally carried in the barrel. A motor mounted below the pump housing and operatively couples to the plunger causes the plunger to reciprocate between an upstroke and a down-stroke. A valve and porting arrangement directs well fluid in the barrel below the plunger into the annular passage and out the discharge during a down stroke of the plunger. The valve and porting arrangement admits well fluid into the barrel below the plunger during the up stroke of the plunger. A connecting rod extends between the motor and the plunger. The connecting rod is in tension during the down-stroke.

Downhole motor driven reciprocating well pump

A well pump assembly has an upper plunger and a lower plunger. A working fluid conduit extends between the upper and lower plunger. An upper piston in the working fluid conduit is connected with the upper plunger. A lower piston in the working fluid conduit is connected with the lower plunger. A downstroke working fluid is located between the upper and lower pistons in the working fluid conduit. An upstroke conduit extends between an upper port in the working fluid conduit above the upper piston and a lower port in working fluid conduit below the lower piston. An upstroke working fluid fills the upstroke conduit and the working fluid conduit above the upper piston and below the lower piston.

Deviation tolerant well plunger pump

A well pump has a standing valve seat with a standing valve mounted in a lower end of a barrel. A plunger is carried within the barrel for axial stoking movement. A travelling seat with a travelling valve are mounted in a lower end of the plunger. The travelling valve has a head that lands on the travelling valve seat while the travelling valve is in a closed position. The travelling valve has a stem extending downward from the head through a hole in the travelling seat. The stem is a permanent magnet. Another permanent magnet is carried by the barrel below the travelling magnet. The polarities of the magnets are configured to interact and cause the travelling valve to lift relative to the travelling seat to an open position as the plunger nears a bottom of a stroke.
