A card reader can include a card insertion slot, a conveyor member, a card-reading head, and a pendulum sensor assembly. The card insertion slot can receive a card from a user. The conveyor member can be configured to move the card along a transport path extending at least partially within the card reader. The card-reading head can be positioned along the transport path, directed toward the transport path. The card-reading head can be configured to read data held on a magnetic strip or held on an embedded chip. The pendulum sensor assembly can include a pendulum and a first sensor. The pendulum can extend into the transport path and can be freely-pivotable about a pivot axis. The first sensor can be configured to detect an angular position of the pendulum about the pivot axis.

Card reader with enhanced tamper resistance

A card reader includes a user-card-insertion slot operatively connected to user-card path. A data-reader is located in an interior of the card reader. A plate is located in the interior of the card reader. The plate is adjacent to the data-reader and interior to the user-card-insertion slot. The plate is configured to block the insertion of a skimming or shimming device and to bend during an attempt to remove the plate from the interior of the card reader. The plate may be configured such that a power connection between the plate and a circuit supplying power to the card reader may be broken during an attempt to remove the plate from the interior of the card reader.

The automated banking machine includes a cash dispenser operative to dispense cash to machine users and to cause the value of cash to be assessed to financial accounts corresponding to card data. The automated banking machine is further operative to receive currency bills or other sheets from a user and to process and store such sheets through operation of a currency accepting device. The account corresponding to card data may be credited for the value of bills or other sheets received.

The machine includes a card reader that is operative to read card data usable to identify at least one of a user of the machine and a financial account. A computer associated with the machine is operative to cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and to cause a determination to be made that read card data corresponds to a financial account authorized to conduct a transaction through the machine. The computer is operative responsive at least in part to the determination to cause the financial account to be at least one of assessed and credited with a value associated with a financial transaction.
