The present invention is drawn to UV-curable ink and coating compositions comprising cleavage type photoinitiators and acids. The acids may be inorganic or organic acids, or acids generated by a photoacid generator during UV-cure. Incorporation of the acids into the UV-curable ink and coating compositions results in a reduction of migratable photodecomposition products that are produced by cleavage type photoinitiators during UV-cure. The ink and coating compositions are particularly useful for use in applications that require low migration of low molecular weight materials, such as, for example, food packaging.

The present invention is drawn to UV-curable ink and coating compositions comprising acylphosphine oxide photoinitiators and acids. Energy curable compositions including polyols, and any blend of ethylenically unsaturated monomers and oligomers. It is preferred that the polyol substances according to the invention have greater than one hydroxy group and preferably have boiling points in excess of 170&#xb0; C. The compositions of the invention are particularly useful for the printing or coating of food packaging and may be applied via any printing or coating method, although inkjet printing is a preferred method.

Energy curable compositions comprising polyols

Described herein are polymeric aminoacrylates formed by the reaction of polyalkylene glycol diacrylates with bireactive amines. The polymeric aminoacrylate are comprised of moieties of poly(alkylene glycol) diacrylate and moieties of bireactive amines. Also described herein are energy curable ink and coating compositions that include the described polymeric aminoacrylates. The energy curable ink and coating compositions that include the described polymeric aminoacrylates are well-suited for use in packaging applications where low migration of uncured monomer material after cure is desired, such as in the packaging of foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, etc.

Polymeric aminoacrylates

The present invention provides energy-curable compositions comprising aminoacrylates produced by the Michael addition reaction of any blend of highly alkoxylated monomers with any blend of mono- and/or bireactive amines. Suitable highly alkoxylated monomers include, but are not limited to, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylates, poly(propylene glycol) diacrylates, and ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylates. The alkoxylated monomers have a degree of alkoxylation equal to or greater than 2.0 per functional group. The compositions of the present invention further comprise greater than 10% (w/w) of any blend of monomers having molecular weights of less than 1000 Daltons.

Energy curable compositions comprising polymeric aminoacrylates

The present invention provides digital printing inks comprising one or more acrylamides. Particularly preferred are inks containing diacetone acrylamide. The inks of the invention show good cure speed, blocking resistance, tack free cure, stability and resistance to blocking, and adhesion to the substrate. The inks of the invention are useful for replacing the currently used inks containing odiferous and toxic components.

Digital printing inks

The invention describes the use of a water-based energy curable inkjet ink or coating composition comprising one or more synthetic rheology modifiers, one or more energy curable resins, one or more tertiary amines, and water. The viscosity of the water-based energy curable inkjet ink or coating compositions is fine tuned to the requirements of the print head through the use of a synthetic thickener. The extremely low levels required of this type of material are particularly advantageous because they then have little if any impact on the physical properties of the dried and UV cured ink. Surprisingly, the use of s synthetic thickener at these low levels gives Newtonian character inks.

The invention describes the use of a water-based UV curable inkjet printing ink wherein the ink is basic due to the presence of a tertiary amine, allowing the complete dissolution of an acid functional photoinitiator of Formula I or Formula IA (wherein R, R, R, n, q, and y are as defined herein). This combination of photoinitiator and tertiary amine allows the rapid low dosage UV curing of a water-based UV formulation using a UV LED light source. 

Water-based UV inkjet ink

The acrylate monomers of the present invention, particularly o-phenyl phenoxyethyl acrylate, provide very fast curing, hard and solvent resistant digital printing inks, and yet are also still surprisingly flexible. These properties make for a technically superior alternative to the widely accepted very hard monomer isobornyl acrylate. O-phenyl phenoxyethylacrylate also has the additional benefit of being free from the strong odor associated with isobornyl acrylate.

Cyclic carbamate functional compounds, which are the reaction product of a cyclic carbamate having an acrylate functional group, such as N-(2-acryloyloxyethyl)oxazolidinone, with aliphatic amine compounds, said cyclic carbamate functional compounds being useful as oxygen scavengers in energy-curable compositions, such as inks, coatings and adhesives, that comprise (a) the cyclic carbamate functional compound, (b) reactive monomers and/or oligomers and, optionally, (c) a photoinitiator.
