A method for maintaining vital product data (VPD) of each field replaceable unit (FRUs) in a computer system, the computer system including a first FRU and a second FRU operatively coupled with the first FRU. The method includes calculating a parity for the VPD of the second FRU, and upon detecting a failure of the second FRU, regenerating the VPD for the failed second FRU using the parity.

Parity-based vital product data backup

A method for maintaining vital product data (VPD) contained in an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) on a field replaceable unit (FRU) of a computer system that has a cache. The method includes maintaining a copy of the VPD in the cache, retrieving the copy of the VPD from the cache upon receiving a read request of the VPD, and, upon receiving a write request to write data to the VPD, writing the data to the copy of the VPD, determining whether the VPD in the EEPROM is in synchronization with the copy of the VPD in the cache, and, if the VPD and the copy of the VPD are in synchronization, writing the data to the EEPROM.

Recovering failed writes to vital product data devices

A method, apparatus and program storage device for updating a non-volatile memory in an embedded system is provided. The invention includes detaching the non-volatile memory from all expectable non-volatile memory references, creating a temporary, volatile-memory file system for allocation of volatile memory space as needed for the non-volatile memory update process, copying all procedural code required to perform the non-volatile memory update into the volatile memory, changing the system search path definitions temporarily to point to the volatile memory, and performing the non-volatile memory update.

Update in-use flash memory without external interfaces

A method and apparatus are provided for abstraction of a physical hardware implementation to logical software drivers. An operating system kernel includes a device driver layer, an enhanced I/O abstraction layer and physical hardware implementation details layer. The physical hardware implementation details layer encapsulates hardware details for the physical hardware implementation. The enhanced I/O abstraction layer abstracts the hardware details for the device driver layer and creates unique logical I/O device structures for each embedded function in the physical hardware implementation. By using the enhanced I/O abstraction layer, device drivers maintain their independence from the physical hardware implementation. Using the enhanced I/O abstraction layer also enables a single driver with one binary image to support embedded functions spread out across multiple chip implementations, and multiple instances of an embedded function on one or multiple chips.
