The invention provides non-antimony containing polymerization catalysts for the condensation of polyesters. The catalyst is in the form of a clear chlorine and/or bromine containing solution of a metal glycoxide and a metal glycolate having a pH in the range of from 0 to about 1, and containing chlorine and/or bromine atoms at a number ratio of chlorine and/or bromine to total metal cations in the catalyst ranging from about 0.5:1 to about 3:1. Polyesters produced with this catalyst have improved melt elasticity, and higher melt viscosity. The former property is desirable for the preparation of large and complex shaped polyester containers, and the latter property is desirable for melt spinning of industrial grade fibers and tire cords.

This invention relates to a branched fractal three dimensional porous polymer species which comprises rigid aromatic recurring units having electrophilic or nucleophilic reactive moieties on the exterior thereof. Another aspect of this invention relates to a star polymer comprising a polymeric core formed of the fractal polymers (FPS) of this invention having linear polymeric moieties grafted to the exterior thereof by way of residues formed by reaction between the reactive moieties on the exterior of the fractal polymer (FP) and complimentary reactive moieties on a linear polymer. Yet another aspect of this invention relates to polymeric composites comprising a polymer matrix having dispersed therein the star polymers of this invention.

The invention relates to a process for forming chain extended polymers and graft and block polymers and copolymers which comprises the steps of: (a) forming an intimate mixture of one or more polymers and one or more effective phosphorus (III) chain extension reagent compounds; wherein at least one of said effective chain extension reagents has bonded to the phosphorus (III) atom at least one group which is a nitrogen-containing heteroaromatic moiety that is bonded through a nitrogen of the heteroaromatic moiety to the phosphorus (III) atom by a single bond; and (b) heating said mixture for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form said extended chain polymer or copolymer. Further embodiments relate to polymers and copolymers prepared in accordance with the process of this invention as well as articles formed from these polymers and polymer compositions comprising the polymeric materials of this invention.
