A system and method for repurposing of cryptographic capabilities in an electronic warfare (EW) environment is presented. A method begins by determining in a client system a cryptographic function to be performed; however, the client system does not have any cryptographic functionality. The client system then requests the cryptographic function be performed in a cryptographic logic that is physically secured with the client system and is external to the client system. The cryptographic logic performs the cryptographic function to produce a cryptographic result. The cryptographic result is then provided to the client system.

Method for repurposing of communications cryptographic capabilities

A system and method for converting a non-cognitive radio into a cognitive radio is presented. A cognitive radio system includes, a non-cognitive radio; an electronic device, a spectrum sensing logic and configuration and management logic. The electronic device is connected to the non-cognitive radio so that it receives and/or transmits messages to/from a wireless network. The configuration and management logic is connected between the non-cognitive radio and the spectrum sensing logic. The spectrum sensing logic and the configuration and management logic are removable from the non-cognitive radio allowing the cognitive radio to operate in a non-cognitive mode. The spectrum sensing logic senses a wireless environment to determine available frequencies and available channels. The configuration and management logic transmits available frequencies, available channels or other spectrum data to a remote spectrum manager that is managing access to the wireless network.

Method and system to make current wireless radios cognitive using an external sensor and application level messaging

The invention in one aspect is an optical modulator which includes a waveguide region of semiconductor material. In order to achieve a gradual, essentially linear transfer function, the bandgap of the waveguide region is graded along the direction of light propogation or perpendicular thereto. In accordance with another aspect, the invention is an electroabsorption modulated laser where the portion of the waveguide region defining the modulator has a graded bandgap. In accordance with a method aspect, the waveguide region of the modulator is grown using a mask having a varying width to achieve the graded bandgap.

A method of fabricating an expanded beam optical waveguide device (e.g., a laser), comprises the steps of (a) forming a first semiconductor waveguide region having first and second sections of different thickness and an intermediate vertical taper section of varying thickness coupling the first and second sections to one another, the first waveguide region being effective to expand the size of the beam as it propagates from the first section to the second section, (b) forming a second semiconductor region (e.g., a laser active region) on the first waveguide region, (c) etching the second region so as to form an essentially vertical first surface of length A-B which extends obliquely across the propagation axis of the device, (d) forming a third semiconductor region (e.g., a cladding region) on the second region and over the first surface, and (e) etching an elongated mesa along the axis, the mesa extending through at least the second region and the first surface so as to form a second waveguide region having an oblique, essentially second vertical surface which has a length a-b&lt;A-B and which is a subsection of the first surface, the second surface forming an asymmetric horizontal taper effective to optically couple the beam between the second waveguide region and the first waveguide region. Also described is a monolithically integrated optical amplifier and electroabsorption modulator with a dual waveguide expanded beam device fabricated by the inventive method.
