An apparatus for atomizing a gasoline-alcohol blend of automotive fuel and supplying a supplemental amount of vaporized fuel to the intake ports of an engine during cold weather start-up. Also a method of making the same. The apparatus comprises a tubular member having a plurality of configured atomizing orifices. It is positioned inside an engine air intake manifold with its orifice facing away from the intake port side of the manifold in an upstream direction. The orifices are formed by a stamping process wherein a die deforms the tube inwardly at each orifice site and ultimately punctures the tube wall producing a 'T' shaped orifice opening with burred irregular edges and contoured sides. Preferably, each of the apertures is located between a pair of intake ports. Fuel is supplied to a head end of the tubular member, such as by means of an electromagnetic fuel injector, and the tail end of the member is closed.

Cold start fuel atomizer and process

A fuel rail assembly for distributing fuel to a plurality of electromagnetic fuel injectors which in turn supply atomized fuel to the cylinders of an internal combustion engine. Each of the injectors has a fuel inlet section that is removably held in an injector socket in the rail. Inside the rail a filter member, having a relatively large surface area, is provided at each injector socket to filter only that porton of the fuel which flows into its respective socket immediately prior to the entry of the fuel into the socket. The injector sockets and the filter members are designed so they have mating cylindrical sections which allow the filter members to be telescoped over the corresponding cylindrical sections of the sockets. Each filter member has a dome section which covers a fuel inlet aperture in the socket. The dome section extends from the cylindrical section into an open space above it where the apex of the dome abuts another member of the rail assembly thereby holding the filter member in place.

Fuel rail with internal filter

An oil separator device for removing a substantial portion of the oil contained in the crankcase fumes of an internal combustion engine. The device is designed to be mounted on the inside of a rocker arm cover of the engine as a part of the crankcase ventilation system. Internal baffles direct a laminar flow of crankcase fumes through the separator canister along a folded path from an inlet in the bottom of the canister to an outlet in the top. Partially isolated channels extend along opposite edges of the flow path. Oil in the fumes attaches itself to the internal surfaces of the separator and flows down these surfaces, which are inclined, to a sump in the bottom. A tubular assembly connected to the bottom of the separator provides combined fume inlet and oil return passageways. The distal end of this tubular assembly has a special configuration which tends to prevent the upward flow of fumes through the oil return passageway, enhance the downward return flow of separated oil therein and prevent the reintroduction of returning oil into the fume stream inlet.

Oil separator for crankcase fumes

An oil jet piston cooling device which directs a stream of oil against the inside of a piston of an internal combustion engine. It comprises a hollow body member and an arcuate tubular spout member. The body member is a stepped hollow cylindrical member with an internally valved inlet opening on its smaller diameter upstream end. The smaller diameter body section defines a first portion of an entrance chamber. A second portion of the entrance chamber is defined by a coaxially disposed cylindrical upstream end section of the tubular spout member, which end section is fitted tightly inside the larger diameter section of the body member. The cross sectional area of the interior of each section of the device is equal to or greater than the cross sectional area of each succeeding section taken from inlet to outlet and the passageway is streamlined to reduce tuburlence. The device is designed to have its body end inserted into a bore that communicates with an oil artery on the pressure side of the bearing lubricating oil circulation system of the engine.

Oil jet piston cooler

A retainer spring clip for holding an end of a fuel injector in an injector socket of a fuel rail. The retainer clip is attached securely to the socket nose end of an injector by a plurality of evenly spaced apart claw elements extending laterally from one side of a planar annular central disk section of the clip at the periphery thereof. An equal plurality of retention spring fingers extending laterally from the other side of the disk periphery are provided to givingly enter a fuel port aperture in a fuel rail injector socket. The claw elements and retention spring fingers have spring sections disposed in the plane of the disk. Additionally, the spring fingers have second spring sections extending laterally from the the first spring sections. Preferably, the claw elements are located at diametrically opposed peripheral positions from those of the spring fingers.

Fuel injector retainer clip

An intake manifold assembly comprising sheet metal top and bottom members which define an air intake throat section, a plenum section and a plurality of hollow runners extending from the plenum section to a ported manifold mounting plate integrally attached to the distal ends of the runners. A throttle valve assembly insert is contained in or on the throat section and provided with a passageway for circulating a heating fluid. Provisions are also made for various sensing and control functions. In addition a fuel supply rail, having a number of fuel injector receptacles for holding and supplying fuel to a plurality of separate electromagnetic fuel injectors, is integrally attached to the top of the manifold over the distal ends of the runners. The receptacles each have open top and bottom ends and are attached such that their open bottom ends are in fluid communication with the interior of the runners. The component parts are bonded together by copper bracing in a controlled atmosphere furnace.

Engine intake manifold assembly

A low profile fuel injection rail assembly for supplying fuel to a plurality of electromagnetic fuel injectors on an internal combustion engine. The fuel rail assembly is characterized by a plurality of fuel sump chambers defined by linearly spaced apart nodular rail sections which are connected in series by a plurality of tubular rail sections having cross sectional openings of reduced size. A recessed socket which embraces an end of a fuel injector and has an aperture for supplying fuel thereto is formed in each sump chamber.

Low profile fuel injection rail

A low inertia springless check valve suitable for operation at high frequencies in a hot environment against a high cyclic back pressure with a relatively constant low input pressure, such as in an automotive engine exhaust air induction system. The valve has a circular elastomeric diaphragm mounted on a supporting frame by means of a retainer disk, a fastener and a diaphragm limiter. A central portion of the diaphragm is compressed between the disk and limiter to cause the originally flat diaphragm to become dished and biased towards the valve seat. The limiter is designed to stabilize, in the flow direction, a portion of the diaphragm extending along the entire length of an adjacent diameter of the diaphragm. The retainer disk also functions in part as a diaphragm motion limiter in the check direction.

Low inertia check valve

A low profile fuel injection rail assembly for supplying fuel to a plurality of electromagnetic fuel injectors on an internal combustion engine. The fuel rail assembly is characterized by a plurality of fuel sump chambers defined by linearly spaced apart nodular rail sections which are connected in series by a plurality of tubular rail sections having cross sectional openings of reduced size. Each sump chamber surrounds an injector socket recessed into the bottom of the rail or an injector receptacle recessed into the top of the rail. Fuel is supplied to the injectors through inlets in the sockets or receptacles. Fuel supply and return fitments are mounted at one end of the rail along with means for connecting a fuel pressure regulator having two coaxial fuel passageways.

An afterburner device for injecting fresh air laterally into the exhaust gas streams of a multiple cylinder internal combustion engine. The afterburner has a planar gasket section for mounting between the engine block and the exhaust manifold. Exhaust gas stream port holes extend laterally through the gasket section in alignment with similar port holes in the engine block and manifold. A plurality of fresh air input passages within the gasket section extend from the port holes to a fresh air supply plenum section of the afterburner.

Exhaust gas afterburner

A rugged fuel rail assembly for holding a plurality of electromechanical fuel injector elements in aligned positions on an internal combustion engine. The beam portion of the fuel rail is comprised of two elongated manifold members with overlapping sides brazed together. One of the manifold members has a series of planar sites with apertures for retaining and precisely aligning a plurality of injector cups. To prevent vapor locks the injector cups are mounted with their cavities in close proximity to the inside of the fuel rail. In addition to being designed for ease of assembly and to provide adequate rigidity without excessive weight, the fuel rail is designed so that various fabricating steps, including the insertion on an internal divider, can be performed from the inside of the rail members prior to assembly.

Fuel injection rail assembly

A rugged fuel rail assembly for holding a plurality of electromechanical fuel injector elements in aligned positions on an internal combustion engine. The beam portion of the fuel rail is comprised of two elongated manifold members with overlapping sides brazed together. One of the manifold members has a series of planar sites with apertures for retaining and precisely aligning a plurality of injector cups. To prevent vapor locks the injector cups are mounted with their cavities in close proximity to the inside of the fuel rail. The fuel rail is structurally designed for ease of assembly and to provide adequate rigidity without excessive weight.

A compact heat exchanger suitable for use in an automotive exhaust gas recirculation system. It has two interconnected elongated cooling chambers supported within a two piece outer casing. The fluid to be cooled enters the first cooling chamber at an intermediate location, flows towards opposite ends of the chamber then out of the first chamber into the ends of a second chamber through connecting passageways and finally towards an outlet located intermediate the ends of the second chamber. The cooling fluid enters the outer casing at one end flows over and along one side of the first chamber then through an aperture in a flange that divides the casing into two compartments. From this aperture it flows along and over both sides of the second chamber and one side of the first chamber to an outlet located at the same end as the coolant inlet. The component parts are designed to be assembled in a foolproof manner and copper brazed together with relative ease.

Dual fluid heat exchanger

A tubular metal nipple for joining with the end of a copper tube by means of solder to readily produce a reliable joint in refrigeration plumbing system. The nipple has a inner copper sleeve concentrically spaced from the inside wall of a steel outer casing with an impervious intervening layer of brazing material filling the space and bonding the sleeve to the outer casing. The distal end of the sleeve is tapered or flared outwardly to produce an annular solder well when a tube end is inserted into the nipple.

Composite metal nipple

An oil separator device for use in a crankcase ventilation system of an internal combustion engine. The device comprises a cannister having an internal baffle member and partition means defining therewith an oil laden fume inlet chamber, an oil separating chamber and a fume outlet chamber. Oil laden fumes enter the fume inlet chamber where they are directed by the baffle member to a first 180.degree. volute section of the oil separating chamber and then to a second 180.degree. volute section having a smaller radius of curvature than the first section to thereby produce a vortex region adjacent to the center of the second volute section. Gaseous fluid with oil removed flows upwardly out of the oil separating chamber into the fume outlet chamber through a flue aperture in the partition at a location above the vortex region while separated oil is returned to the engine lubrication system through a drain aperture in the bottom of the cannister.
