A masterbatch composition suitable for use as a flame retardant in extruded polymer foams, and process for manufacturing the same, and extruded foams containing same; the composition comprising: (a) 20 to 40 parts by weight base resin comprising styrene homopolymer or copolymer; (b) 1 to 16 parts by weight acid scavenger comprising an epoxy-based compound; (c) 2 to 6 parts by weight antioxidant comprising an alkyl or aryl phosphite; and (d) 45 to 60 parts by weight flame retardant comprising a non-hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) brominated polymer or copolymer, wherein the amounts of (a), (b), (c), and (d) total 100 parts by weight; and (e) 0.6 to 10 parts by weight of pH moderator, based on 100 parts of (a) base resin plus (e) water soluble pH moderator.

Quaternary ammonium tribromides and quaternary phosphonium tribromides are recovered from an organic solvent by washing with an aqueous hydrazine solution. The hydrazine reacts to form nitrogen, hydrobromic acid and a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium monobromide. The hydrobromic acid and quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium migrate to the aqueous phase, thereby effecting the removal of the tribromides from the organic solvent. The hydrobromic acid can be neutralized with a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium hydroxide to produce a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium monobromide. The monobromides produced can be reacted with elemental bromine to regenerate a tribromide brominating agent.

Process for recovering quaternary salt bromination catalyst

Conjugated diene polymers such as a styrene-butadiene copolymer are sequentially brominated by reaction with a quaternary ammonium tribromide or quaternary phosphonium tribromide and halohydrated by reaction with an N-haloimide compound. This produces a brominated and halohydrated polymer with very good thermal stability. The product is useful as a flame retardant in a variety of polymer systems.

Extruded polymer foams are made from a polymer composition that includes an unbrominated styrenic polymer, a brominated vinyl aromatic/butadiene flame retardant, and an unbrominated vinyl aromatic/butadiene polymer. The unbrominated vinyl aromatic/butadiene polymer improves the cell homogeneity.

Aliphatic bromine-containing polymers are stabilized using a mixture of an alkyl phosphite and an epoxy compound. This stabilizer package is very effective at preventing cross-linking reactions from occurring when the aliphatic bromine-containing polymer is subjected to high temperatures as are seen in melt processing operations. The stabilized aliphatic bromine-containing polymer is useful as a flame retardant for other polymers, notably polystyrene foam.

Extruded polystyrene foams are made with an added brominated styrene-butadiene polymer as a flame retardant. The blowing agent is a mixture of carbon dioxide, ethanol and water, which may also contain a C-Chydrocarbon. The blowing agent mixture overcomes a tendency of the brominated styrene-butadiene to form very small cells. This allows the foam to expand fully to form good quality, low density extruded foam.

Brominated styrene-butadiene copolymers are useful gas transport films. The gas transport films are made by brominating a starting styrene-butadiene copolymer, and then forming the brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer into a film. The film may contain a blend of the brominated styrene-butadiene copolymer with one or more other polymers. The films have excellent selectivities between certain pairs of gasses, and exhibit high gas transport rates for various gasses such as carbon dioxide and water vapor.

Brominated and epoxidized organic compounds are useful flame retardants for polymers such as polystyrene. The organic compounds contain both bromine and oxirane groups, and have molecular weights of at least 1500. The brominated and epoxidized organic compounds can be prepared by sequentially brominating and epoxiding (in either order) a starting compound that contains multiple non-conjugated carbon-carbon double bonds.

A polybutadiene brominating method uses a quaternary ammonium tribromide as the brominating agent. The brominating is performed in solution, and dual extractions recover the spent brominating agent and recombine it with fresh bromine to regenerate an active tribromide. Solvent and aqueous extraction streams can be purified and recycled as needed.

The present invention relates to a composition comprising a blend of a luminescent polymer and a low molecular weight (&#x3c;5000 amu) viscosity modifier, which has an emission maximum in the range of 350-480 nm, contains no exocyclic double bonds, and modifies the viscosity of the polymer without substantially altering emissive properties of the neat polymer. Modification of viscosity without concomitant modification of emissive properties is desirable where the polymer is already tuned to emit at the desired wavelength.

A process for preparing a thermoplastic hydroxy-functionalized polyester comprises contacting a dicarboxylic acid or a mixture of dicarboxylic acids with a diepoxide in a given solvent in the presence of an end-capping agent and a catalyst under conditions sufficient to form the hydroxy-functionalized polyesters or polyethers.

Thermoplastic hydroxy ether polymers containing inertly substituted or unsubstituted stilbene and ether linkages in the backbone chain and pendant hydroxyl moieties are prepared by reacting (a) an inertly substituted or unsubstituted dihydroxy-stilbene with (b) a diglycidyl ether and, optionally, (c) a difunctional monomer under conditions sufficient to cause the hydroxyl moieties to react with the epoxy moieties to form ether linkages and pendant hydroxyl moieties. The polymers exhibit excellent oxygen barrier properties and are useful in packaging oxygen-sensitive materials.

Polyaminoethers prepared by reacting (1) a primary amine or bis(secondary) diamine with (2) a diglyeidyl ether and (3) an amine- or epoxy-functionalized poly(alkylene oxide) exhibit a combination of low glass transition temperature (Tg of 14.degree. C. to 73.degree. C.) and low oxygen transmission rate (OTR of 0.53 to 19.0 cc-mil/100-in.sup.2 -atm-day).
