Methods including precipitated and mined calcium carbonate lost circulation materials for use in subterranean formation operations. The precipitated calcium carbonate lost circulation materials are formed under a chosen set of precipitation conditions, including in situ in a subterranean formation. The mined calcium carbonate lost circulation materials are obtained in a desired morphological form under naturally occurring mined conditions. The precipitated and mined calcium carbonate lost circulation materials may be needle-shaped aragonite having an aspect ratio of about 1.4 to about 15.

Calcium carbonate lost circulation material morphologies for use in subterranean formation operations

This disclosure provides a pre-mixed lost circulation treatment that can be pre-mixed ahead of time at a plant and delivered to a drilling site in one or more transport containers because the pre-mixture having a shelf life of at least one month and possibly longer. Because the components of the lost circulation treatment are mixed at a controlled mix site, the consistency of the lost circulation treatment is improved and can be better maintained from one lost circulation treatment to another. Further, one or more of the components of the pre-mixed treatment can be placed in a portable tote container that can be quickly and easily transported to the drilling site upon demand, or the tote can be delivered to the drilling site before a lost circulation zone is actually encountered.

Mixing process and delivery of lost circulation slurries

Methods for using cement compositions in subterranean formations are provided. In some embodiments, the methods comprise introducing a first treatment fluid comprising a first base fluid and a metal oxide into a wellbore penetrating at least a portion of a subterranean formation; introducing a spacer fluid into the wellbore that separates the first treatment fluid from at least a second treatment fluid; introducing the second treatment fluid into the wellbore, wherein the second treatment fluid comprises a second base fluid and a soluble salt; allowing the first treatment fluid to contact the second treatment fluid to form a cement mixture; and allowing the cement mixture to at least partially set.

Application of metal oxide-based cements in wellbores

Generally, assessing the properties of a plug comprising wellbore strengthening materials may enable the design of more efficient wellbore strengthening additives and fluids because the properties of the plug may translate to the near wellbore strengthening effect of the wellbore strengthening materials of the plug. Assessing such properties may involve applying a differential pressure to a plug formed in a passageway of a tool comprising at least one sensor proximal to the passageway plug, and then measuring at least one attribute selected from the group consisting of a normal plug pressure, a normal plug displacement, and any combination thereof with the at least one sensor.

Methods relating to designing wellbore strengthening fluids

In some instances, a fluid loss control enhancement additive may synergistically work with lost circulation materials ('LCM') to arrest lost circulation in wellbores where LCMs alone have been ineffective. For example, a method may involve treating a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation with a pill comprising an aqueous base fluid and a lost circulation material; observing fluid loss from the wellbore to the subterranean formation while treating the wellbore with the pill; and adding salt, a swellable polymer, and fibers to the pill.

Methods of enhancing fluid loss control using additives

The present invention relates to methods of treating subterranean formations. In various embodiments, the present invention provides a method of treating a subterranean formation including placing a first aqueous composition and a second aqueous composition in a subterranean formation. The placing includes injecting the first aqueous composition through a tubular passage in a wellbore. The placing also includes injecting the second aqueous composition through an annular passage in the wellbore.

Methods for treatment of a subterranean formation

A granular lost circulation material for use in a wellbore during drilling operations to minimize loss of drilling fluid at a lost circulation area is disclosed. The granular lost circulation material comprises a granular material and a non-hardening tackifying agent. The granular material is coated with the non-hardening tackifying agent. The granular lost circulation material forms agglomerated particles, which form a filter cake at the lost circulation area.

Apparatus and methods for determining swelling reactivity of materials under subterranean wellbore conditions

Highly resilient carbon-based materials having a resiliency greater than about 120% at 10,000 psi may be useful as lost circulation materials (LCMs) for wellbore strengthening and lost circulation mitigation in downhole operations in subterranean formations with depleted zones. For example, a downhole method may include drilling at least a portion of a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation with at least one depleted zone having a plurality of fractures extending from the wellbore into the at least one depleted zone; circulating a treatment fluid through the wellbore, the treatment fluid comprising a base fluid and a resilient carbon-based material having a resiliency greater than about 120% at 10,000 psi; contacting the at least one depleted zone with the resilient carbon-based material; and plugging at least some of the plurality of fractures in the at least one depleted zone with the resilient carbon-based material.

Resilient carbon-based materials as lost circulation materials and related methods

A self-triggering, in-situ crosslinking fluid system is provided for controlling lost circulation for drilling in a carbonate formation. Methods of drilling a well include the steps of: (A) forming a drilling fluid comprising an aqueous phase, wherein the aqueous phase comprises: (i) water; (ii) acid, wherein the acid is at least sufficiently strong and in at least a sufficient concentration such that the aqueous phase has an initial pH of less than about 2; (iii) a viscosity-increasing agent; and (iv) a crosslinker, wherein the crosslinker is selected or controlled to crosslink the viscosity-increasing agent at a pH range anywhere in a range of about 1.5 to about 6.5 and that is at least higher than the initial pH of the aqueous phase; and (B) drilling with the drilling fluid to form a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation.

Self-triggering lost circulation control in carbonate formation

Apparatus and methods for simulation of bore hole fractures are disclosed. A device for simulating a fracture in a subterranean formation comprises a housing, a gap in the housing, and one or more shims positioned inside the gap. The shims cover at least a portion of a surface of a wall forming the gap. The device further comprises an inlet for directing a sample fluid into the gap. The sample fluid flows through the gap and flows out of the gap through an outlet.

Methods and systems for testing lost circulation materials

A method of treating a well the method including the steps of: (A) forming a fluid including: (i) a shear-thinning aqueous liquid phase; and (ii) an inorganic setting material; wherein the fluid is shear-thinning, pumpable, and settable; and (B) introducing the fluid into the well.

Viscous settable fluid for lost circulation in subterranean formations

An invert emulsion drilling fluid, and a method of drilling with such fluid, having improved rheology at low mud weights and high temperatures. The improved rheology is effected with addition of a rheology additive of the invention comprising fatty dimer diamines or dimer diamines and an organic acid or ester of the acid. A nonlimiting example of such a rheology additive comprises a C36 fatty dimer diamine and adipic acid or dimethyl adipate.

Methods and materials to enhance high temperature rheology in invert emulsions

A treatment fluid comprising: a base fluid; a plurality of a first type of fiber, wherein the first type of fiber is degradable; a plurality of a second type of fiber; and a third lost-circulation material, wherein the first type of fibers, the second type of fibers, and the third lost-circulation material inhibit or prevent some or all of the treatment fluid from penetrating into a subterranean formation from a wellbore, wherein the wellbore penetrates the subterranean formation.
