A system according to one embodiment includes a magnetic head having a plurality of sensors arranged to simultaneously read at least three immediately adjacent data tracks on a magnetic medium, wherein none of the sensors share more than one lead with any other of the sensors. Such embodiment may be implemented in a magnetic data storage system such as a disk drive system, which may include a magnetic head, a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic medium (e.g., hard disk) over the magnetic head, and a controller electrically coupled to the magnetic head.

A magnetic recording apparatus includes a write element and an optical device for heating a portion of a magnetic medium. The optical device and the write element are arranged to generally prevent the write element from affecting the optical fields generated by the optical device.

A system, according to one embodiment, includes a magnetic head having sensor structures disposed laterally along a cross-track direction, each sensor structure having a free layer, a soft bias layer positioned laterally to each sensor structure, an antiparallel coupling layer above each soft bias layer, a magnetic layer above each antiparallel coupling layer, wherein magnetic moments of the soft bias layer and the magnetic layer are antiparallel coupled, and a stabilizing layer above each magnetic layer for stabilizing a magnetic orientation of the magnetic layer. Moreover, opposing faces of the magnetic layers are positioned apart by a distance that causes each magnetic layer to form a magnetic circuit with the associated free layer and the associated soft bias layer.

The present invention generally relates to a read head in a magnetic recording head. The read head utilizes two reader elements that are stacked in the down track direction within the same read gap to improve resolution and SNR by combining the signals from the two reader elements. The output waveform from each read element is asymmetric in the down track direction; however, by use of equalizer settings and waveform combining the algorithm in signal processing, the combined waveform has a similar or better resolution and higher SNR compared to a single read element in a smaller read gap.

A magnetic device includes a write element having a write element tip that defines a medium confronting surface. The write element is operable to generate a first field at the medium confronting surface. A conductor is proximate the write element tip and first and second conductive leads are connected to the conductor and configured to deliver a current to the conductor to generate a second field that augments the first field. First and second side elements are disposed on opposite sides of the write element tip in a cross-track direction at the medium confronting surface. At least a portion of the first conductive lead is disposed adjacent the first side element on a side opposite the medium confronting surface, and at least a portion of the second conductive lead is disposed adjacent the second side element on a side opposite the medium confronting surface.

One such embodiment includes a magnetic read/write head including a read transducer, and a write transducer including a pair of write poles, a hybrid coil including a first coil having a pancake coil configuration with at least one turn positioned between the pair of write poles, and a second coil having a helical coil configuration including a plurality of turns positioned between the pair of write poles, the second coil coupled to the first coil, where the at least one turn of the first coil is interleaved with the turns of the second coil.

Methods for manufacturing hybrid coils for magnetic write heads used in storage systems

A magnetic recording head includes a magnetic recording write element including a main pole having a leading edge and an opposing trailing edge and a first side surface and a second side surface separating the leading edge from the trailing edge. A first side shield gap separates a first side shield from the first side of the main pole and a second side shield gap separates the second side shield from the second side of the main pole. A front magnetic shield is separated from the main pole trailing edge by a front shield gap. A recess extends into the front shield adjacent to the trailing edge, and parallel to the trailing edge. The recess extends laterally away from the main pole and into the front shield a distance greater than the first side shield gap or second side shield gap.

A method and system for providing a magnetic recording head is described. The magnetic recording head has an air-bearing surface (ABS) configured to reside in proximity to a media during use. The head includes a first coil, a second coil, a main pole, and a third coil. The first coil has a first plurality of turns and is configured to carry a first write current in a first direction. The second coil has a second plurality of turns and is configured to carry a second write current in a second direction. The main pole is between the first coil and the second coil. The third coil has a third plurality of turns configured to carry a third write current in a third direction.

Systems and methods for providing hybrid coils for magnetic write heads used in disk drives are described. An energy assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) transducer coupled with a laser is described. The EAMR transducer has an air-bearing surface (ABS) residing near a media during use. The EAMR transducer includes optical and writer modules. The optical module includes a waveguide and a near field transducer (NFT). The waveguide directs the energy from the laser toward the ABS. The NFT focuses the energy onto the media. The optical and writer modules are physically separate such that no portion of the waveguide is interleaved with a magnetic portion of the writer module. The writer module includes a write pole and coil(s). The write pole includes a pole-tip portion for providing a magnetic field to the media and a yoke. The pole-tip portion has an ABS-facing surface, a sloped surface, and a NFT-facing surface therebetween. The sloped surface is at least twenty-five and not more than sixty-five degrees from the NFT-facing surface.
