A portable or other electronic device has two or more display devices or screens that can be used to display different subsets of image signals. The effect is that the device simulates the display capabilities of devices having much larger screens. The device has an open or active configuration, in which the multiple screens are available for displaying image signals, and a closed or inactive configuration, in which some or all of the multiple screens are folded together or otherwise stowed away to reduce the size of the device for storage and/or carrying. By simulating large-display operations, electronic devices according to the present invention are capable of presenting more useable information to the user than is otherwise possible using prior art devices having a single small screen.

Multi-display electronic devices having open and closed configurations

In a wireless communication system, the constellation mapping scheme employed may be changed on a per-time-slot basis, i.e., from time slot to time slot, so that the constellation used to encode the symbols of each time slot may be different for each time slot within a single frame and may be different for a particular time slot in different consecutive frames. In other words, several constellation mapping schemes are available, with each providing the ability to transmit a different number of bits per symbol, and the particular constellation mapping scheme employed for any time slot need be selected for that time slot only. The ability to use any particular constellation mapping scheme is dependent on the current channel quality. The particular constellation mapping used for the user data of the time slot may be indicated in the preamble of the time slot. To this end, each time slot may have its own preamble that is mapped with a constellation mapping scheme which is a) known &agrave; priori, b) may be the same for all time slots, and c) may be different from the constellation mapping scheme used to encode user data in the time slot. A receiver can determine the constellation mapping used for each time slot from solely from the preamble of the time slot.

Demodulation method for receiver

In a system in which the modulation scheme employed may change on a per-time-slot basis, a user's available data rate may change even if the user maintains the same number of time slots, because the capacity of the user's time slots may change. If one or more such changes in modulation scheme occurs, the data rate available to the user may no longer match his current data rate needs. Therefore, a method is disclosed for determining the number of time slots to assign to a user as a function of the user's current data rate requirement and the actual current cumulative data rate of the time slots currently assigned to the user. The user data rate requirement may further be a function of a quality of service (QoS) contracted for by the user. Thus, the assignment of the time slots within the frame is made dynamically and the number of time slots employed by a user is increased or decreased according to the user's current data rate requirements and the ability of the time slots already assigned to the user to meet those requirements.

Medium allocation method

A two layered segmentation technique coupled with a two layer error detection technique is used to implement the wired to wireless network interface. A wireless network divides network layer packets from a wired network into radio data link packets, and the information within the radio data link packets is divided into portions that can be placed into time slots. Error detection is performed on each of the time slots and also at the radio data link packet level to determine if there is an error within the radio data link packet. Errors detected in any radio data link packet only requires retransmission of the radio data link packet in which the error was detected, and, advantageously, do not require retransmission of the entire network layer packet as would have been required in a system that mapped directly from network layer packets to time slots. Further advantageously, the system is able to be employed by systems that utilize dynamic constellation mapping schemes which result in different time slots for the same user being mapped with different constellations, and so they have different bit to symbol ratios. This is because such changes in the constellation mapping scheme are handled at the time slot level, and are not seen at the radio data link packet level. The segmentation of the network layer packets into radio link packets is independent of the number and size of the time slots which will carry the radio link packets.

Data link protocol for wireless systems

A system and method for transcoding a document to be transmitted to a mobile station according to document display capabilities thereof and a wireless infrastructure containing the same. The system includes: (1) a station identifying circuit that receives data indicating a particular mobile station's document display capabilities and (2) a transcoding circuit that modifies the document according to the document display capabilities before the document is transmitted to the particular mobile station, the particular mobile station thereby freed of having locally to substantially modify the document according to the document display capabilities.

Document transcoding system and method for mobile stations and wireless infrastructure employing the same

Modulation method for transmitter

A system for directly connecting a mobile communication system to a data network is provided. A user initiates data communication with the data network from a mobile communication system equipped with a computer, a modem and a mobile communication device. Data communication signals, which may be designated for routing to the data network, are transmitted from the mobile communication device to a hybrid base station having a standard base station, a control unit and a data network gateway, via a wireless telecommunication network. The signals are received by the hybrid base station and routed to the control unit which determines whether the received data communication signals are of the type designated for routing to the data network. If the data communication signals are of the type so designated, the control unit routes the signals to the data network gateway, which then connects the mobile communication system to the data network, enabling a direct data communication connection therebetween via the wireless data communication network. Otherwise, the data communication signals are routed to another destination, such as to another base station or to the PSTN.

An automatically advancing user interface for entering new data and editing pre-existing data in data entry fields on a display screen. Data is entered and/or edited in a universal handwriting capture widget. A plurality of text entry widgets corresponding to the different data entry fields are displayed on the screen. The user defines a sequentially ordered list of text entry widgets. At any given time only one text entry widget is selected as the current text entry widget based on the sequentially ordered list. The data in the current text entry widget is displayed in the handwriting capture widget. After the data has been entered and/or edited in the handwriting capture widget it is displayed in the current text entry widget. The current text entry widget is then automatically advanced by selecting as the current text entry widget the next text entry widget in the sequentially ordered list of text entry widgets.

A wireless communication terminal comprises a first housing section including an antenna for enabling wireless communications with the terminal and a second housing section including a second communications antenna, the second housing section being extendibly connected to the first housing in an manner such that when the second housing section is in its extended position the second antenna is located one half wavelength from the first antenna. One or both of the antennas may be a fixed type, e.g., a whip or stub, or a retractable type, e.g., telescoping. The antennas may be located external or may be internal (e.g., patch type antennas) to the housing sections.
