A method and system for mitigating a urea deposit within an SCR system that includes determining a mass of an accumulated urea deposit present within the SCR catalyst and SCR piping, comparing the mass of the accumulated urea deposit with a deposit upper threshold limit, and initiating an SCR regeneration event when the mass of the accumulated urea deposit is greater than the deposit upper threshold limit. The method further includes determining an amount of NHpassing through the SCR catalyst downstream of the urea deposit, comparing the amount of NHpassing through the SCR catalyst with an NHregeneration threshold limit, and terminating the SCR regeneration event when the level of NHpassing through the SCR catalyst is less than the SCR NHregeneration threshold.

Method and system for mitigating urea deposits within an SCR catalyst system

A system includes an internal combustion engine having an air intake, a fuel inlet, and exhaust outlet. The system further includes a NOsensor operably coupled to the exhaust outlet and structured to provide an exhaust Ovalue, and a controller structured to functionally execute operations for determining a tank biofuel value. The controller includes an operation conditions module that interprets an intake Ovalue, the exhaust Ovalue, and a biofuel Ocorrelation, an Ofuel determination module that determines an Obiofuel value in response to the intake Ovalue, the exhaust Ovalue, and the biofuel Ocorrelation, and a fuel composition module that determines a tank biofuel value in response to the Obiofuel value. The controller further includes a biofuel reporting module that provides the tank biofuel value.
