Data is migrated from a source storage device to a destination storage device using tape media. Both the source storage device and the destination storage device utilize disk drives to store data. A portion of data is detected migrating to the tape media. Metadata of the portion of data is changed to identify the portion of data as residing on the tape media. A prefetch command for the portion of data is detected. It is determined that the portion of data is stored on the tape media. In response to determining that the portion of data is stored on the tape media, the prefetch command is executing without recalling the portion of data to the disk drives. Instead, the portion of data is read directly from the tape media.

Managing storage system metadata during data migration

A method, computer system, and a computer program product for enhanced application write operations is provided. The present invention may include performing a write operation by an application node. The present invention may then include committing the write operation to a local buffer cache. The present invention may then include sending the application node an indication that the write operation was successful. The present invention may then include flushing the local buffer cache to a disk based on a buffer flush trigger, and the present invention may lastly include sending a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to at least one gateway node, wherein functionality of the gateway node is located on different physical nodes which are separated from the application node over the network.

Enhanced application write performance

A method, computer system, and a computer program product for enhanced application write operations is provided. The present invention may include performing a write operation by an application node. The present invention may then include committing the write operation to a local buffer cache. The present invention may then include flushing the local buffer cache to a disk, and the present invention may lastly include sending a Remote Procedure Call (RPC) to a gateway node.

A method for performing block-level incremental backups of file system volumes using a pseudo device layer of a volume manager. A driver associated with a snapshot backup program is configured to back up the full pseudo disk upon receipt of a backup request, and not automatically performed upon startup. Incremental backups are performed thereafter using a driver that has been modified to include a monitor that tracks writes during backups. The standard I/O routine of the kernel is overwritten with an I/O routine that tracks write operations. The volume manager is called back to perform the incremental backup operations upon each write operation. The going down routine of the kernel is also overwritten to track any updates to the volume manager. If the volume manager is updated, the data structure is cleared and future backups are performed from a subsequent full backup.

Method and system for supporting block-level incremental backups of file system volumes using volume pseudo devices

Copy capability moved into the SAN fabric and provided as a data mover service. A well-known address is utilized to receive copy commands from the hosts. Each switch in the fabric contains a front end or service interface which receives the copy command and manages access control or zoning and LUN mapping. LUN mapping and zoning are based on shared databases. Assuming correct zoning, the service interface will perform any necessary LUN mapping on the received copy command and forward the command to a copy engine to perform the copy operation. The switch service interface also maintains copy operation status, querying the copy engine if necessary, so that any host status requests are also simply handled. Additionally, if multiple copy engines are present, the switches can communicate to perform load balancing.

Fibre channel fabric copy service

In some embodiments, this includes identifying a parent virtual container, identifying a linked child virtual container, creating a fast copy of the parent virtual container and the linked child virtual container, and consolidating the copy of the parent virtual container and the copy of the linked child virtual container based on the format of the parent virtual container.

Synthetic block based backup

Exemplary methods for deduplicating encrypted files are described herein. The exemplary methods include receiving a first encrypted data file from a remote source that is encrypted by a first security key. In one embodiment, the methods include transmitting to a remote security manager a first key identifier (ID) that is extracted from the first data file, the first key ID identifying the first security key. In one aspect of the invention, in response to receiving the first security key from the remote security manager based on the first key ID, decrypting the first data file using the first security key provided by the remote security manager. In at least one embodiment, the methods include deduplicating the decrypted first data file.

Information is managed by receiving at a data source device, from an application running on a data source device, an instruction associated with a file system object. It is determined at the data source device if the instruction is able to be satisfied by a file system running on the data source device. If it is determined that the instruction is not able to be satisfied by the file system, the instruction is performed without the services of the file system; the application is unaware that the file system object is managed by an entity other than the file system running on the data source device.

A method for tracking resizing and recreation of volumes in a block-based snapshot backup program. In an embodiment, a record ID is associated with a major and minor number assigned to each volume to be backed up. The record ID maintains a unique reference to the bitmap corresponding to a backed up volume in case the minor number is reused by the volume manager driver during a recreate operation. The length of the volume to be maintained is maintained and compared to the length of the to track any resizing of the volume by the volume manager. In the event of any resizing or recreation, the original bitmap can be replaced with an updated bitmap to ensure proper backup of the resized or recreated volumes.

Method and system for tracking re-sizing and re-creation of volumes created for making incremental backups

A system and method integrates namespace management and storage management in a storage system environment. According to the invention, an integrated management framework provides an underlying infrastructure that supports various heterogenous storage access protocols within a single, logical namespace service. The logical namespace service is based on extensions to underlying storage management processes that cooperate to create the integrated management framework. Notably, these extensions are embodied as novel library functionality.

System and method for integrating namespace management and storage management in a storage system environment

Block based backup

A method and apparatus for securing networks, focusing on application in Fibre Channel networks. A combination of unique security techniques are combined to provide overall network security. Responsibility for security in the network is assigned to one or more designated entities. The designated entities deploy management information throughout the network to enhance security by modifying the capabilities and operational permissions of the devices participating in the network. For example, through network control: logical management access or physical I/O access may be limited on a per device or per I/O basis; and all devices and ports in the network operate only with other approved devices and ports. These designated entities can better manage network security by exploiting a unique link authentication system as well as a unique push-model secure distributed time service. The link authentication involves a multi-phase nonce exchange exploiting various derivations of the nonce and other information such as hashes and encryptions. The push-model secure time distribution departs from the traditional Fibre Channel pull mode time distribution and provides for secure and reliable distributed time so that various security attacks may be defeated.

Network security and applications to the fabric environment

A migration engine is provided for use in a logical namespace of a storage system environment. A remote agent of an integrated management framework is installed on a host machine of the storage system environment and includes a pre-installed migration plug-in module that configures the agent as a migration engine adapted to provide a data migration capability. That is, the migration plug-in has the intelligence to configure the remote agent as a migration engine adapted to perform data migration from a source location to a destination location in the storage system environment.
