A power supply system has a power switch circuit that switches an input voltage to generate a switched input voltage, an output circuit that generates an output voltage from the switched input voltage, and a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller that generates a PWM signal to control the power switch circuit. The PWM controller turns OFF the PWM signal based on a ramp signal that emulates a current of an output inductor and a feedback signal that indicates an error between the output voltage and a reference voltage.

Artificial ripple modulation control circuitry

An embodiment of a power supply includes an output node, inductively coupled phase paths, and a sensor circuit. The output node is configured to provide a regulated output signal, and the inductively coupled phase paths are each configured to provide a respective phase current to the output node. And the sensor circuit is configured to generate a sense signal that represents the phase current flowing through one of the phase paths. For example, because the phase paths are inductively coupled to one another, the sensor circuit takes into account the portions of the phase currents induced by the inductive couplings to generate a sense signal that more accurately represents the phase current through a single phase path as compared to conventional sensor circuits.

Sensing a phase-path current in a coupled-inductor power supply

An embodiment of a power supply includes a supply output node, phase paths, and sensor circuits. The supply output node is operable to carry a regulated output voltage, and each phase path has a respective phase-path non-output node, has a respective phase-path output node coupled to the supply output node, and is operable to carry a respective phase current. And each sensor circuit has a respective sensor node coupled to the phase-path non-output nodes and is operable to generate a respective sense signal that represents the phase current flowing through a respective one of the phase paths. For example, where the phase paths are magnetically coupled to one another, the sensor circuits take into account the portions of the phase currents induced by the magnetic couplings to generate sense signals that more accurately represent the phase currents as compared to conventional sensor circuits.

Sensing a phase-path current in a multiphase power supply such as a coupled-inductor power supply

A voltage regulation circuit includes a power stage for generating a regulated output voltage responsive to an input voltage and at least one PWM signal. A voltage divider circuit is connected to the output of the power stage and generates a feedback voltage. First circuitry generates the at least one PWM signal responsive to a voltage error signal, a filtered output voltage signal and a ramp voltage signal. The filtered output voltage is used for substantially removing loop gain change caused by the voltage divider circuit. A voltage compensation circuit generates the voltage error signal responsive to a feedback voltage and a reference voltage.

A system, voltage supply circuit, control unit for a voltage supply circuit, and method of controlling a voltage supply circuit are disclosed. For example, a system is disclosed that comprises at least one electronic circuit and a voltage supply unit coupled to an input of the at least one electronic circuit. The voltage supply unit includes a power unit to supply a voltage to the at least one electronic circuit and a control unit to control an operating mode of the power unit, an output of the control unit coupled to an input of the power unit. The control unit includes a mode selector to select the operating mode of the power unit, coupled to at least a first output of the power unit, an amplifier coupled to the at least a first output of the power unit, a compensation circuit, and a first switching unit coupled to the mode selector and the compensation circuit, to couple the compensation circuit to the amplifier if a selected operating mode of the power unit is a first mode.

System and method for smoothing mode transitions in a voltage supply

A current sensing circuit with AC and DC temperature compensation for sensing current through an output inductor which has an inherent DC resistor with a temperature varying resistance. A first RC circuit is coupled across the output inductor and has a time constant. The first amplifier provides a sense signal indicative of voltage of the first RC circuit. The second RC circuit is coupled to a first correction node and receives the sense signal. The second resistor has a temperature varying resistance so that the second RC circuit has a time constant commensurate with a time constant of the output inductor. The third RC circuit is coupled to a second correction node and has a time constant equal commensurate with the first RC circuit. The second amplifier provides a corrected sense signal based on the correction nodes.

AC and DC temperature compensation scheme for DCR current sense

A method includes simultaneously driving a load via first and second magnetically coupled regulator phases for a first duration, uncoupling one of the phases from the load after the first duration, and, after uncoupling the one phase from the load, allowing a current through the one phase to decay. For example, such a method allows energy stored in the uncoupled phase to be recaptured to the output transient response of a power supply.

Power supply control

An embodiment of a power-supply controller is operable to couple a first node of a first inductor to first and second reference nodes, the first inductor composing a first phase of a power supply and having a second node coupled to an output node of the power supply. The controller is also operable to couple a first node of a second inductor to third and fourth reference nodes, the second inductor composing a second phase of the power supply and having a second node. Furthermore, the controller is operable to uncouple the second node of the second inductor from the output node of the power supply. For example, where the first and second inductors are magnetically coupled, such a controller allows the power supply to operate as an uncoupled-inductor (UI) power supply in one mode, and as a coupled-inductor (CI) power supply in another mode.

A pulse width modulation (PWM) modulator for a multiphase power converter and related adaptive firing order (AFO) method includes a multiphase leading edge generator having pulse generating circuitry associated with each of the regulator phases, wherein the pulse generating circuitry generates phase pulses associated with each of the phases. An adaptive firing order (AFO) controller having circuitry including a mixer receives and sums the phase pulses into a summing signal and uses the summing signal to generate a series of turn-on pulses therefrom. A multiphase PWM generator has inputs coupled to an output of the AFO controller coupled to receive the series of turn-on pulses, the multiphase PWM generator having circuitry for generating said PWM signals therefrom. An adaptive firing order (AFO) controlled multi-phase power converter includes a plurality of parallel connected regulator phases controlled by respective pulse width modulation (PWM) signals provided by the PWM modulator.
