An end effector of a surgical instrument may be equipped with a staple cartridge selection system, including a load sensing cartridge insertable into a channel of a cartridge jaw of an end effector for assembly therewith, the load sensing cartridge including: a body having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion; an elongated channel within the body between the proximal end portion and the distal end portion; a load sensor disposed within the elongated channel of the load sensing cartridge, the load sensor configured to sense a parameter indicative of a tissue thickness when tissue is clamped between an anvil jaw and the cartridge jaw in the clamped configuration; and a visual indicator configured to display a visual indication based on the parameter sensed by the load sensor.

A surgical instrument is disclosed including a motor-powered firing system comprising a firing motor, a motor-powered closure system comprising a closure motor, and a control system. The firing motor is configured to drive a firing member between an unfired position and a fired position. The closure motor is configured to transition an end effector between an open state and a clamped state. The control system is configured to set a first parameter of the motor-powered closure system, based on a received first input, drive the end effector toward the clamped state with the motor-powered closure system using the first parameter, monitor a second parameter associated with the end effector transitioning toward the clamped state, set a third parameter of the motor-powered firing system, based on a received second input and the monitored second parameter, and drive the firing member toward the fired position using the third parameter.

Adaptation of independent firing and closure powered stapling systems

Disclosed is a method of adapting energy modality due to a short circuit or tissue type grasped in the jaws of an end effector of a surgical instrument and a system with a control circuit configured to execute the method. The method includes determining a first and second electrode of an array of segmented electrodes are shorted to each other, blending monopolar and bipolar RF energy to the array of segmented electrodes, and determining that the first and second electrodes remain shorted after the blending step. Additionally, or alternatively, the method may include determining that the first and second electrodes are no longer shorted after the blending step, sensing an electrical parameter of tissue grasped within jaws of the end effector, and determining an energy sealing and cutting procedure based on the sensed electrical parameter of the tissue.

A surgical instrument includes a handle assembly, an elongate shaft, an end effector, and control system having a processor and a memory. The handle assembly is movable between a plurality of positions and includes an interface. The control system can cause the processor to toggle between a plurality of interface configurations each associated with one of the positions of the handle assembly. Additionally, or alternatively, the control system can toggle the interface between a primary interface configuration with operational controls and a secondary interface configuration with navigation controls. Additionally, or alternatively, the interface can include a touchscreen configured to provide a firing input signal to the processor. Additionally, or alternatively, a surgical assembly can include the surgical instrument and a remote operating unit with a secondary interface configured to control the end effector.

The projections define a localized tissue-facing surface area. A localized valley is defined on the deck between the projections. An augmented reality display system and method for use during a surgical procedure are disclosed. An imaging device captures a real image of a surgical area during the surgical procedure generates a first data feed. A sensor device generates a second data feed. An augmented reality device including an augmented reality display generates an augmented overlay based on the first and second data feeds. The augmented overlay includes a visual portion and a non-visual visual portion. A processor receives the first and second data feeds and combines the first and second data feeds to generate the augmented overlay.

A staple cartridge comprising a cartridge body including a deck and projections extending from the deck is disclosed. When used with a surgical stapling instrument, the deck of the staple cartridge can be compressed against patient tissue before the staples contained in the staple cartridge are ejected. The projections are engaged with the patient tissue and hold the patient tissue in place. The staple cartridge further comprises an electrical trace defined on the deck that extends between at least two of the projections.
