An optical device may include an outer box. The optical device may include an inner box within the outer box. The optical device may include a heating element on a surface of the inner box. The heating element may include one or more openings. The optical device may include one or more mounting pads. A mounting pad of the one or more mounting pads may be arranged in an opening of the one or more openings and mechanically couple the inner box to the outer box through the opening.

An opto-mechanical assembly includes a first thermal control element disposed on a region of a first section of an enclosure; a second thermal control element disposed on a region of a second section of the enclosure; and an optical element that includes a first portion and a second portion. The first thermal control element is configured to heat the first portion of the optical element and to cause the first portion of the optical element to be associated with a first temperature, and the second thermal control element is configured to heat the second portion of the optical element and to cause the second portion of the optical element to be associated with a second temperature. This causes a difference between the first temperature and the second temperature to satisfy a temperature difference threshold. Accordingly, this also causes a temperature gradient along an axis of the optical element to satisfy a temperature gradient threshold.

A micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device may include a mirror structure suspended from a first hinge and a second hinge that are arranged to enable the mirror structure to be tilted about a tilt axis. The mirror structure may include a first actuator and a second actuator located on opposite sides of the tilt axis. The MEMS device may include a fixed electrode coupled to first actuator to cause the mirror structure to tilt about the tilt axis in a first direction based on a fixed voltage applied to the fixed electrode. The MEMS device includes a driving electrode coupled to the second actuator to cause the mirror structure to tilt about the tilt axis in a second direction opposite from the first direction based on a driving voltage applied to the driving electrode.

A pluggable optical module may include a substrate. The pluggable optical module may include a compressible sliding thermal interface disposed on the substrate to contact a riding heatsink. The compressible sliding thermal interface material may be compressed to fill interstices between a first surface of the substrate and a second surface of the riding heatsink. The compressible sliding thermal interface may protrude from the first surface of the substrate such that insertion of the pluggable optical module into a cage compresses the compressible sliding thermal interface to achieve a threshold thermal boundary resistance.

An optical channel monitor (OCM) may include a modulator to provide a modulation signal and a local oscillator (LO) to provide a modulated LO signal. The modulated LO signal may be created by modulating an LO signal based on the modulation signal. The OCM may include a mixer to generate a pair of mixed optical signals. The pair of mixed optical signals may be generated based on mixing the modulated LO signal and an input optical signal. The OCM may include an optical detector to provide, based on the pair of mixed optical signals, a first electrical signal corresponding to a coherent mixture of the input optical signal and the modulated LO signal. The OCM may include a synchronous demodulator to provide, based on the first electrical signal and the modulation signal, a second electrical signal representative of the optical power spectrum of the input optical signal.

A method may include receiving, by a switching engine, an optical signal that includes a channel. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, a first beam steering grating to direct a first portion of the channel to a first output port. The method may include applying, by the switching engine, one or more second beam steering gratings to direct at least one of a second portion of the channel to a second output port, or a third portion of the channel to a photodetector. The third portion may be approximately less, in power, than 10 percent of the channel.

Optical network monitoring and protection using a phased array switching engine

A tunable optical filter is disclosed having an input port, a beam translator for translating input and output optical beams, an element having optical power for collimating the translated beam, a reflective wavelength dispersive element, and an output port. The beam translator can include a tiltable MEMS mirror coupled to an angle-to-offset optical element. An output port can be extended into a plurality of egress ports, each receiving a fraction of the scanned optical spectrum. A multi-path scanning optical spectrometer can be used as an optical channel monitor for monitoring performance of a wavelength selective switch, or for other tasks.

Tunable optical filter and spectrometer

A high-resolution tunable optical filter uses a dispersive element in a double pass configuration. The double pass configuration is provided by a reflective quarter-wave plate that conveniently reduces polarization dispersion loss (PDL) of the filter. The filter also includes a fibre tube for supporting an input optical fibre and an output optical fibre, and a lens having an optical axis, which is disposed such that a focal point thereof is substantially at one of the input and output optical fibres. To provide increase resolution the filter is tuned by rotating the reflective quarter-wave plate. To provide high power capabilities the fibre jackets of the input and output fibres are optionally stripped back. To provide a symmetrical spectral response the fibre tube is optionally mounted at an angle to the optical axis of the lens.

A system for determining response characteristics, insertion loss and group delay, of an optical component by applying a sweeping wavelength optical signal that is modulated with an RF signal, measuring the insertion loss and group delay at a series of wavelengths and correlating the measurements to wavelengths. A method for synthesis of an effective modulation frequency in determining the group delay response characteristics of an optical component by obtaining a series of measurements over a sample optical spectrum using a given modulation frequency and calculating a weighted average of the group delays in the series of measurements giving a result substantially equivalent to a measurement taken using a modulation frequency equal to the effective modulation frequency.

Measuring response characteristics of an optical component

A system and method for resolving polarization mode dispersion (PMD) in a span of optical fiber is described. The method involves three main stages: (1) launch two co-polarized optical signals to generate respective four-wave mixing product fields at the Stokes wavelength &lgr; or the anti-Stokes wavelength &lgr; sequentially in each part of the fiber to calculate chromatic dispersion; (2) repeatedly launch two optical signals at various states of polarization (SOP) using methods of stage (1) to calculate overall dispersion (i.e., a combination of chromatic dispersion and PMD); and (3) resolve from the overall dispersion calculated at stage (2) the PMD based on the known chromatic dispersion calculated at stage (1). In an ideal case, the PMD can be calculated from two separate measurements at different co-polarized states of polarization, where group velocity is calculated from a measured dispersion map, as a function of wavelength, at the SOPs and the difference is calculated to resolve PMD.
