A system includes an enclosure about a path toward a physical damaging system configured for rendering media storage devices inoperable. A scanning system obtains identifying information of a media storage device in the path. A barrier is selectively movable between an accessible state in which media storage device introduction into the enclosure is permitted and a blocking state in which such introduction into the enclosure is prevented. A locking mechanism locks the barrier in the blocking state in response to the barrier being moved to the blocking state. The locking mechanism unlocks the barrier and permits a shift to the accessible state subsequent to the scanning system obtaining the identifying information and subsequent to an action triggered based on the identifying information obtained from the scanning system.

An apparatus for disposal of electronic devices includes a transport mechanism for transferring the storage devices through the apparatus. A scanner scans or reads the devices as the devices move through the apparatus, a sanitizer for degaussing or erasing the storage devices, and a destruction mechanism for physically deforming the devices. The apparatus is further configured to receive scanned information from the scanner, determine identification information for the devices based on the scanned information, and update status information of the devices during movement of the devices between the scanner, sanitizer, and destruction mechanism.

A secured storage container for transporting storage devices from a data center to a destruction center for degaussing or other destruction techniques. The secured storage container can include a scanner for reading a barcode on the storage devices for inventory tracking. The container can also include a lid that is opened via a security badge for removing the storage devices from the container. A GPS-based tracking module can be used to ensure the container's location is aligned with a route to the destruction center. Finally, the container can have a moveable floor that moves upward as storage devices are removed so that a technician can easily remove all of the storage devices in the container.
