A vent valve apparatus () for use with a system for supplying breathable gas pressurised above atmospheric pressure to a human or animal. The apparatus () includes a gas washout vent (), a vent valve () adapted to progressively restrict the flow area of the washout vent (), and a pressure sensitive vent valve control means (). The control means is adapted to progressively cause the vent valve () to restrict the flow area of the gas washout vent () in response to increases in the pressure of the gas supply, thereby substantially regulating the volumetric flow of gas and/or COgas through the washout vent () over a range of gas supply pressures.

A vent valve apparatus for use with a system for supplying breathable gas pressurized above atmospheric pressure to a human or animal includes a gas washout vent, a vent valve adapted to progressively restrict the flow area of the washout vent, and a pressure sensitive vent valve controller. The controller is adapted to progressively cause the vent valve to restrict the flow area of the gas washout vent in response to increases in the pressure of the gas supply. Thereby, the vent valve substantially regulates the flow of gas through the washout vent over a range of gas supply pressures.

The pressure of breathable gas exiting a flow generator is controlled by adjusting the efficiency of the flow generator. In one embodiment, a baffle plate of a control element can restrict the open entry area of a motor driven turbine of the flow generator. In another embodiment, the degree of opening of the mouth of the flow generator inlet is automatically adjustable in response to the needs of the user, hence creating a pneumatic impedance, and which simultaneously controls, in the same manner, the impedance of the outlet of the device.

Pressure control in CPAP treatment or assisted respiration

The pressure of breathable gas exiting a flow generator (,) is controlled by adjusting the efficiency of the flow generator. In one embodiment, a baffle plate (,) of a control element (,) can restrict the open entry area of a motor (,) driven turbine (,) of the flow generator. In another form, the degree of opening of the mouth of the flow generator inlet (,), and hence the pneumatic impedance, can be controlled, as in a similar manner can the impedance outlet (,).

A vent valve apparatus (10) for use with a system for supplying breathable gas pressurised above atmospheric pressure to a human or animal. The apparatus (10) includes a gas washout vent (15), a vent valve (18) adapted to progressively restrict the flow area of the washout vent (15), and a pressure sensitive vent valve control means (20,22,23). The control means is adapted to progressively cause the vent valve (18) to restrict the flow area of the gas washout vent (15) in response to increases in the pressure of the gas supply, thereby substantially regulating the volumetric flow of gas and/or CO.sub.2 gas through the washout vent (15) over a range of gas supply pressures.
