Provided herein are functionalized branched alcohols comprising a glycosyl group, an ethylene oxide linker and a tail. The ethylene oxide linker comprises one or more units of ethylene oxide. The glycosyl group is a substituent structure of a cyclic monosaccharide. The tail comprises a branched paraffin or isomers thereof, the glycosyl group is attached to the ethylene oxide linker, and the ethylene oxide linker is attached to the tail. In an aspect, the glycosyl group is a substituent structure of glucose, mannose, galactose, sorbose, fructose, xylose, arabinose, ribose, lyxose, lactose, or maltose, or variants thereof. The tail can be a paraffin comprising 9 to 13 carbon atoms.

Functionalized branched alcohols as non-ionic sugar surfactants

Compositions comprising a sulfonated reaction product or a salt thereof may be prepared from a cyclohexylbenzene compound that has been alkylated with an olefin of formula RRCCH, wherein Ris a C-Chydrocarbyl group, and Ris H or a C-Chydrocarbyl group. Methods for sulfonating an alkylated cyclohexylbenzene compound prepared from a cyclohexylbenzene compound that has been alkylated with an olefin of formula RRCCH, wherein Ris a C-Chydrocarbyl group, and Ris H or a C-Chydrocarbyl group may comprise contacting the alkylated cyclohexylbenzene compound with a sulfonating reagent; forming a sulfonated reaction product; and converting the sulfonated reaction product into a sulfonate salt.

Amphiphilic cyclohexylbenzene compounds derived from alpha olefins or vinylidene alpha olefin dimers

Provided herein are novel extended branched alcohols having a lower branching number and improved biodegradability when compared to other branched alcohols. Also provided are novel extended branched ethoxylates having surfactant properties which can be more efficient in reducing surface tension when compared to the ethoxylated form of other branched alcohols. Further provided are novel syntheses of making extended branched alcohols and extended branched ethoxylates.

Surfactant performance through carbon chain extension and lower branching

Compositions comprising a sulfonated reaction product or a salt thereof may be prepared from a biphenyl compound that has been alkylated with an olefin of formula RRCCH, wherein Ris a C-Chydrocarbyl group, and Ris H or a C-Chydrocarbyl group. Methods for sulfonating an alkylated biphenyl compound prepared from a biphenyl compound that has been alkylated with an olefin of formula RRCCH, wherein Ris a C-Chydrocarbyl group, and Ris H or a C-Chydrocarbyl group may comprise contacting the alkylated biphenyl compound with a sulfonating reagent; forming a sulfonated reaction product; and converting the sulfonated reaction product into a sulfonate salt.

Amphiphilic biphenyl compounds derived from alpha olefins or vinylidene alpha olefin dimers

A method for selective extraction of naphthenic acids from an acidic crude oil, including: providing an acidic crude oil including naphthenic acids and having a total acid number (TAN) greater than 0.4; mixing the acidic crude oil with a first aqueous solution including water and a weak base to extract a portion of naphthenic acids from the acidic crude oil thereby creating a second aqueous solution containing a mixture of the portion of naphthenic acids, the water and the weak base in an emulsion; separating the second aqueous solution from the emulsion; wherein the second aqueous solution contains an additional portion of the acidic crude oil; adding a salt to the second aqueous solution, thereby causing the additional portion of the acidic crude oil to separate from the second aqueous solution; removing the additional portion of the acidic crude oil from the second aqueous solution; and extracting the portion of the naphthenic acids from the second aqueous solution.

Method for selective extraction of surfactants from crude oil

A lubricating oil including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and a mixture of (i) one or more protected lubricating oil additives having a first performance function, and (ii) one or more unprotected lubricating oil additives having a second performance function, as a minor component. The first performance function and the second performance function are the same. The one or more protected lubricating oil additives are inactive with respect to their performance function. The one or more protected lubricating oil additives are converted into one or more unprotected lubricating oil additives in the lubricating oil in-service in an engine or other mechanical component. The one or more lubricating oil additives having at least one protected active group are converted into one or more lubricating oil additives having at least one unprotected active group in the lubricating oil in-service in an engine or other mechanical component. A composition that includes one or more compounds represented by the formulaR&#x2014;O&#x2014;Rwherein Ris a substituted or unsubstituted aryl or polyaryl group having from about 4 to about 40 carbon atoms, and Ris a substituted or unsubstituted, linear or branched, alkyl group having from about 4 to about 40 carbon atoms. The composition has a viscosity (Kv) from about 1 to about 10 cSt at 100&#xb0; C. as determined by ASTM D-445, a viscosity index (VI) from about &#x2212;100 to about 300 as determined by ASTM D-2270, and a Noack volatility of no greater than 50 percent as determined by ASTM D-5800. The disclosure also relates to a process for producing the composition, a lubricating oil base stock and lubricating oil containing the composition, and a method of reducing boundary friction and improving dispersancy of polar additives of a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil containing the composition.
