A method and system for detecting tampering of an energy meter can involve, in a first phase: gathering magnetic field sample data, an average magnetic field strength, a minimum magnetic field strength, and a maximum magnetic field strength from a magnetic field condition applied to an energy meter by a magnetic sensor that measures a magnetic field in one or more directions, and using learning coefficients calculated from the magnetic field sample data and the average magnetic field strength, the minimum magnetic field strength, and the maximum magnetic field strength to classify with a classifier, magnet tampering conditions with respect to the energy meter. In a second phase, a magnet tamper event can be identified with respect to the energy meter when the magnet tampering condition classified by the classifier is greater than a magnetic detection threshold.

Classification of magnet tampering conditions on a metering device

Embodiments relate to a closed loop communication system. The system can include a consumer mobile device configured with a mobile application to identify its load consumption pattern and communicate the identified load consumption pattern to a utility device. The mobile device also sets a limit for maximum energy consumption through the mobile application. The system can also include the utility device that receives the identified load consumption pattern, and configured to send a short message service (SMS) alert to the mobile device to alert the mobile device to read meter energy consumption reading from energy meter and share with utility device due to direct connection failure with an energy meter. The system can also include an energy meter configured to communicate with the utility device, wherein the utility device attempts to receive the meter energy consumption reading from the energy meter.

Consumer mobile application for three way communication

This disclosure relates to a method and apparatuses for detecting and reporting suspected tampering of an energy meter to a utility. The method and apparatus uses a plurality of sensors to obtain data relating to one or more input parameters based on the type of input signal. The input parameters are mapped with a tamper type to provide a classification of one or more output parameters. The output parameters are compared to one or more operating conditions of the energy meter to identify one or more suspected tampers. Any suspected tampers are reported to the utility.

Method and apparatus for detecting and reporting tampering of an energy meter

An electric energy meter includes a plurality of first terminals for receiving a measure of current of each of one or more phases of power and a plurality of second terminals for receiving a measure of voltage of each of one or more phases of power. A controller is configured to analyze the measure of current and the measure of voltage of each of the one or more phases of power in order to detect power quality issues in one or more of the one or more phases of power. For each of the detected power quality issues, the controller is configured to determine whether the detected power quality issue is caused by a utility generating the power or a consumer consuming the power and to communicate a message indicating the detected power quality issues via a communications port operably coupled to the controller.

Electric energy meter with on-board power quality analytics

A meter case used with a utility meter is disclosed. The meter shell includes a plurality of snap fit joints assembled on the meter case arranged to engage a module cover to mount the module cover to the meter shell. The module cover further includes wire housing formed along an inner periphery of the module cover that houses a wire having a first end and a second end therein. A metal shield placed behind the meter shell is electrically coupled to a first connector. A terminal electrically connected to the metal shield is arranged to discharge current to ground. An electrical contact electrically coupled to the second end of the wire is arranged to engage the first connector to establish an electrical connection to the metal shield for the discharge to ground of electrostatic currents sensed by wire.
