A power control module and a method to create the power control module is provided. The power control module includes a plurality of transformers, wherein each transformer of the plurality of transformers includes a stack of ferrite cores comprising a plurality of ferrite cores and a continuous winding. The continuous winding has a plurality of turns through each ferrite core of the plurality of ferrite cores. The plurality of ferrite cores are oriented such that the plurality of ferrite cores are stacked together with legs of the plurality of ferrite cores oriented in opposite directions, and wherein the continuous winding comprises a folded section that extends between the plurality of ferrite cores of the stack of ferrite.

Method of creating power control module

Example methods and systems described herein include periodically adjusting load applied to a power generating device according to a testing cycle, detecting a peak power point of the power generating device and an associated load that results in the peak power point, adjusting the load applied to the power generating device to match the associated load that results in the peak power point, and based on the adjusted load drawing power outside of a threshold amount of the peak power point, (i) calculating a correction factor to apply to a reference voltage of the power generating device and (ii) adjusting a frequency of the testing cycle.

Methods and systems for matching a load to a peak power point of a power generating device

A rapid start power unit and a method of operating a rapid start power unit are disclosed. A fuel cell converts combustible fuel into electrical power during a normal operational period after an initial start-up period when little to no electrical energy is produced. One combustion chamber receives unspent fuel emitted by the fuel cell and combusts the unspent fuel to generate a first heated gas stream. Another combustion chamber receives combustible fuel and burns the combustible fuel to generate a second heated gas stream during the initial start-up period. A turbine receives and is driven by the first and second heated gas streams to drive a drive shaft. A generator coupled to the drive shaft generates electrical power during the initial start-up period and supplemental power during the normal operational period. In an alternative embodiment, a two-stage combustion chamber is used instead of two serially-arranged separate combustion chambers.

Rapid start hybrid solid oxide fuel cell power system

A method for assembling an electrochemical cell stack may include arranging a plurality of electrochemical cells into an electrochemical cell stack, the electrochemical cell stack including at least a first substack and a second substack; connecting the first substack and second substack such that reactant fluid flows in series from the first substack to the second substack; and coupling the first substack to a first electrical control device such that the first electrical control device selectively electrically reconfigures the first substack to operate in series and in parallel with the second substack.

Modularized electrochemical cell system

An electrochemical cell system including a plurality of electrochemical cells arranged in an electrochemical cell stack, the stack including a plurality of substacks configured such that fluid flows in series from substack to substack, a first electrical control device coupled to a first substack and a second electrical control device coupled to a second substack, wherein the first electrical control device is controllable independently of the second control device to selectively electrically configure the first and second substacks.

Apparatus, systems, and methods provide for the management of a high temperature electrolysis process. According to embodiments described herein, a fuel cell electrolyzer stack is utilized in an electrolysis process. One implementation includes the use of a solid oxide electrolyzer. Input voltage is cycled around a thermal neutral voltage such that the fuel cell electrolyzer stack cycles between operation in an exothermic mode and an endothermic mode. The waste heat generated by operation in the exothermic mode is used to support the endothermic operation. By cycling between operation modes, the temperature of the fuel cell electrolyzer stack may be controlled without the use of a cooling loop or recirculated reactant flow, and the efficiency of the electrolysis process is maximized.

Thermal management of a high temperature fuel cell electrolyzer

An aerospace platform includes a structure having a cavity and a light-transmissive portion that exposes the cavity to sunlight. The aerospace platform further includes a fluid heating system. The fluid heating system includes a fluid-carrying, thermally absorptive structure within the cavity, and a solar collector for collecting light transmitted through the light-transmissive portion and focusing the collected light onto the absorptive structure. The thermally absorptive structure has a high surface absorptivity that retains thermal energy when exposed to solar irradiance and heats fluid contained therein.

Solar-thermal fluid heating for aerospace platforms

Hydrogen powered air vehicles that in some embodiments can fly with very long endurance (10 or more days) at altitudes over 60,000 ft carrying payloads of up to 2,000 pounds. Embodiments may include features such as large wingspan relative to fuselage and an all composite or partial composite structure for light weight and strength. The aircraft of the invention use one or more internal combustion engines adapted for hydrogen combustion, each engine driving propellers. The hydrogen fuel is stored on board in containers, located within the fuselage, as a cryogenic liquid, and is vaporized in a heat exchanger before delivery to the internal combustion engine.
