A two piece fastener system for including a pin member and a collar having an optimized strength with the materials of the pin member and collar having a predetermined shear strength ratio; the collar has a preselected excess volume to provide a desired 'overpacking' condition and is of a size whereby after swage it will define a minimum wall thickness; the collar has an outer surface with a contour which in combination with a preselected excess volume results in a reduction in load required to swage the collar and with a pull type fastener providing a breakneck groove of reduced strength whereby severance of the pintail will occur at a reduced load resulting in a reduction in shock or ghost load applied to workpieces including those of a plastic or composite material.

A two piece blind fastener for securing a plurality of workpieces including a hollow sleeve having a straight shank with an enlarged sleeve head at one end and a pin having an enlarged pin head; the pin has a pin stop shoulder and a lock groove located near the pin stop shoulder; the pin head is adapted to engage the sleeve to form a bulb type blind head in response to a relative axial force applied between the pin and sleeve; the pin stop shoulder is adapted to engage a sleeve stop shoulder to direct the material of the sleeve stop shoulder substantially radially inwardly into the lock groove to lock the pin and sleeve together and to finally form a stop surface on the sleeve for stopping axial movement of the pin through the sleeve; in addition the pin has an expander portion adapted to expand the sleeve shank radially outwardly to fill the openings of the workpieces and with the expander portion having a grooved section with alternate relief grooves and expander segments with the relief grooves receiving excess material of the sleeve after hole fill and to thereby also assist in locking the pin and sleeve together.

A threaded fastener including a nut and a bolt with the nut including a ring section and a nut section with the nut section having a main body portion and a neck portion with the neck portion adapted to be moved into the ring section and to be moved radially inwardly such that the threads in the neck portion are moved into compressive engagement with the engaged threads of the bolt to provide prevailing torque structure resisting loosening of the nut member from the bolt.

In general a torque controlled blind bolt for securing workpieces is shown and which blind bolt has a core pin with a blind side head and a plurality of threads and a nut adapted to be threaded onto the pin threads; the blind bolt which has a main sleeve structure and an expandable blind side sleeve structure is set by torque applied between the pin and nut which causes the expandable sleeve to be expanded by the pin head and to thereby form a load bearing blind head; the blind fastener includes a grip adjuster structure which defines a cavity having a depth selected to define the grip range of the fastener with the grip cavity generally located externally of the workpieces; an anti-rotation structure is formed between the pin head and the expandable sleeve structure to inhibit relative rotation in response to the torque applied between the nut and the pin.

In general a blind fastener for securing workpieces is shown and which blind bolt has a core pin with a blind side head and a plurality of threads or locking grooves and a nut adapted to be threaded onto the pin threads; the blind bolt which has a main sleeve structure and an expandable blind side sleeve structure is set by a relative axial force applied to the pin which forces the expandable sleeve structure against the main sleeve structure causing the expandable sleeve to expand and form a load bearing blind head; the blind fastener includes a grip adjuster structure which defines a cavity having a depth selected to define the grip range of the fastener with the grip cavity generally located externally of the workpieces; the core pin head acts on the expandable sleeve and main sleeve structures to cause a frangible portion in the grip adjuster structure to shear and receive the main sleeve structure after which the blind head engages the blind side of the workpieces, with none of the clamp load developed being shared by the main sleeve structure. The blind threaded fastener can be adapted to be installed by the same installation tool used to install non-blind threaded fasteners of the same nominal diameter.

A high strength, high clamp blind bolt for fastening structural workpieces, which blind bolt has a core pin with a blind side head and a plurality of locking grooves or threads, a high stand-off collar adapted to be swaged into the locking grooves or a nut adapted to be threaded onto the pin threads, a compression frangible main sleeve structure and an expandable, short fixed length blind side sleeve structure; the blind bolt is set by a relative axial force applied to the pin which forces the short blind sleeve structure against the main sleeve structure causing the blind side sleeve to expand and form a blind side structural load bearing blind head; the relative axial force can be applied by pulling in a swage configuration or by torque in a threaded configuration; the core pin head acts on the main sleeve structure to cause a frangible portion to shear and reduce the main sleeve structure length after which the blind head engages the blind side of the workpieces; the high stand-off collar is then swaged into the pin lockgrooves or the nut is threaded further onto the core pin with none of the clamp load developed being shared by the collapsed main sleeve structure resulting in a fastener having a high, uniform workpiece clamp load, a high, uniform tensile strength, and a fixed, short back side protrusion over a wide grip range.

A high strength blind bolt for fastening structural workpieces the blind bolt being of a swage type, pull type construction and having a pin member with a plurality of locking grooves, a main sleeve, an expandable sleeve and a collar adapted to be swaged into the lock grooves, the main sleeve having a tapered nose portion adapted to radially expand the expandable sleeve in response to the application of a preselected relative axial force applied between the pin member and the collar, the tapered nose portion being defined by a preselected small angle to limit the radial expansion of the expandable sleeve to provide a high strength blind head for engaging the adjacent, blind side of the structural workpieces and to initially clamp the structural workpieces together at a high clamp load and to provide a final high, residual clamp load upon swaging of the collar into the lock grooves of the pin member.

A fastening system including a swage type fastener including a pin and a collar adapted to be swaged into helical lock grooves in the pin and with the collar having a female thread which is threadably engageable with the helical lock grooves to selectively clamp or locate the workpieces relative to each other more or less prior to swage, with the collar thread being of a strength to deform or shear relative to the pin threads in response to a relative axial load between the pin and collar at the initiation of the swage operation but prior to swaging and in which the fastener includes a resistance member for permitting pre-clamping of the workpieces together at a selected pre-assembly pre-load while subsequently permitting sufficient relative axial movement between the pin and collar after pre-clamping such that the collar threads can be deformed or sheared prior to initiation of swage whereby the final clamp-up load of the workpieces is substantially uninhibited by the initial threaded engagement of the pin and collar threads.

A blind fastener for fastening workpieces of a crushable or composite material and which provides a blind head having a large bearing area against the adjacent blind side of the workpieces and having a main sleeve with a tapered nose and an expandable sleeve with the expandable sleeve having a primary section and a secondary section with the secondary section having a wall of reduced cross-sectional area and of a lower hardness and/or material strength than the primary section such that after the secondary section has moved past and been expanded over the tapered nose the leading end of the primary section will substantially not move radially inwardly as it is moved over the tapered nose and at a preselected axial or column load the secondary section will substantially fold or collapse to form the blind head with a large bearing area while the primary section will substantially not buckle whereby the pin can provide a visual and/or measurable indication that the fastener has been installed in a proper grip condition.

A blind fastener for fastening workpieces of a crushable or composite material and which provides a blind head having a large bearing area against the adjacent blind side of the workpieces and having a main sleeve and an expandable sleeve with the expandable sleeve having a reduced section or secondary portion at its leading end adapted to be severed from the remainder or primary portion of the expandable sleeve at a preselected axial or column load at which buckling has been initiated with the severed reduced section portion being substantially folded or collapsed to form the blind head with a large bearing area.

A pull type fastener including a tubular sleeve and an elongated pin having a disposable pull portion at one end thereof with the sleeve having an enlarged pin head and a shank, a helically splined portion on the pin shank having ridges and grooves and adapted to engage a preselected portion of the sleeve shank bore to move the sleeve material into the spline grooves. The degree of interference between the splines and the sleeve shank, and the relative hardness ratio of the pin to the sleeve being designed such that the sleeve materiall will flow into the spline grooves without radially expanding the sleeve into interference with the bore of the workpieces being fastened. The result being that until the moment of clamp up the sleeve will rotate relative to the pin along the helical splines at a minimum pull force, then at clamp up a momentary and substantially increased torsional force resulting from the sleeve rotation being arrested assists in severing the pin from the pull portion thereof.
