Wireless devices are commonly carried in fabric-based apparel. Printing metamaterial structures on fabric substrates allows for the ability to create fabric metamaterial layers. A reconfigurable RF based fabric system simply by physically removing or adding different fabric-based metamaterial layers to different regions of the apparel. The fabric-based metamaterial can be used in various filtering applications where the control of phase, reflection angle, refraction angle, polarization, absorption, and transmission of the impinged electromagnetic wave can all be manipulated. Additionally, sophisticated metamaterial systems can be created by combining different metamaterial layers separated above each other. A controllable absorber metamaterial system can be made consisting of two layers. The first layer an electronically controllable that can controllably change between a band-pass and band-reject filter in a relevant frequency band and a second absorptive layer. Vehicles with adjustable metamaterial absorber systems, integrated on the outside or inside of the RF transparent fuselage, have the ability to control their radar cross section dynamically for the purposes of evading detection or spoofing their size by looking larger or similar to vehicles of different radar cross section.

Adjustably transmissive, reflective, and absorptive metamaterials

Vehicles with adjustable metamaterial systems, integrated on the outside or inside of their non-conductive fuselage, have the ability to control their radar cross section dynamically for the purposes of evading detection or spoofing their size by looking larger or more numerous. The frequency response of a metamaterial system can be obtained by combining the RF properties of the individual metamaterial layers that comprise it. A first metamaterial layer that can controllably switch between transmissive and reflection in a relevant frequency band and a second absorptive layer results in a controllable radar cross-section with the ability of controlling the amplitude of the reflected radar pulse. The first layer can be modulated with a repetitive waveform to change the phase of a reflected wave that results in a doppler shift in frequency. The frequency of the modulation can result in a change in range, velocity, or combinations of both. The waveform used can also create a linear change of phase or can be made pseudorandom to create decoy targets that appear to move with random ranges and velocities as detected by a radar. The metamaterial layers can also have a separate passband for allowable communications, navigations, or for other wireless uses within the vehicle. The passband itself can also be switchable or tunable to allow for multiple passband frequencies.

A reconfigurable antenna systems includes a set of envelopes of active metamaterial panels, each envelope in the set being shaped to approximate a surface of at least partial revolution of a curve about an axis, wherein the surface defines a focal locus; a wideband antenna array disposed within the focal locus; and a controller, coupled to the panels, configured to activate each one of the panels, so as to control a property of each of the panels, the property selected from the group consisting of transmissivity, reflectivity, absorption, phase, polarization, bandwidth, angle sensitivity, resonant frequency, and combinations thereof.

Electronically reconfigurable antenna

The present disclosure provides touch communication devices that can convey touch information to a human user and/or receive touch information from the human user. As one example, a touch communication device can include a plurality of tactile units. The touch communication device can individually control each of the tactile units to apply a respective pressure to a surface adjacent to such tactile unit. For example, the touch communication device can control the plurality of tactile units to convey a touch communication to a human user that has the touch communication device adjacent to a portion of his body. As another example, the touch communication device is configured to determine a counter-pressure applied to each tactile unit by the surface adjacent to such tactile unit. The touch communication device can generate information descriptive of a touch communication performed by the human user on the touch communication device.

A reconfigurable antenna system includes an antenna array; a set of metamaterial panels configured to surround the antenna array; a control unit, coupled to each of the metamaterial panels, for selectively addressing each of the metamaterial panels to control separately at least one property of each of the metamaterial panels; and a receiver coupled to the antenna array and to the control unit. The control unit is configured to monitor signal reception by the antenna array via the receiver and to establish a set of configurations of the metamaterial panels to produce a pattern of reception according to a set of prespecified criteria that include a set of azimuthal and elevational ranges characterizing the configurations. Optionally, the system further includes a transmitter coupled to the antenna array and to the control unit.

A module interface of a modular electronic device includes a data interface, coupled to a module communication network of the modular electronic device, that enables data transfer between the module communication network and modules coupled to the data interface; a power interface, coupled to a module power network of the modular electronic device, that enables power transfer between the module power network and modules coupled to the power interface; and a mechanical interface, coupled to a chassis of the modular mobile electronic device, that enables modules to be removably and mechanically coupled to the modular electronic device.

A system for generating an asymmetric magnetic field. The system includes a drive circuit and a stacked winding structure coupled to the drive circuit. The stacked winding structure includes a plurality of winding layers. The plurality of winding layers includes a first winding layer including a first conductive winding having first turns and a second winding layer including a second conductive winding having second turns ion. The plurality of winding layers is arranged to produce a first magnetic field at a first side of the stacked winding structure and a second magnetic field at a second side of the stacked winding structure when the drive circuit electrically drives the plurality of winding layers. The first magnetic field is greater than the second magnetic field.

Method and apparatus for producing an asymmetric magnetic field

Method for oil removal. The method includes adding a magnetizable material, with or without appropriately selected surfactants, of order micron (having no net magnetization) or nanometer size to magnetize the oil or water phase by either making a ferrofluid, magnetorheological fluid, a magnetic Pickering emulsion (oil in water or water in oil emulsion), or any other process to magnetize either oil or water phases. The magnetized fluid is separated from the non-magnetic phase using novel or existing magnetic separation techniques or by permanent magnets or electromagnets thereby separating oil and water phases. The magnetized particles are separated from the magnetized phase using novel or existing magnetic separation techniques to recover and reuse the particles. The two magnetic separation steps can be repeated to further increase recovery efficiency of the liquid phases and the magnetizable particles reused in this continuous process.
