Resistive inks and method of making resistive inks that utilize a phthalonitrile resin as a curable component in the inks are disclosed. In one example, a resistive ink is provided. The resistive ink comprises a solvent, a thermally-curable phthalonitrile-based resin dissolved in the solvent, and one or more conductive fillers. In some examples, the phthalonitrile resin can comprise a B-staged material.

A method, system, and computer program product for predicting abnormal operation of at least one component of a machine is provided. Real time monitoring data from an operating machine is received and monitoring features that are informative of likely abnormal operation are extracted and/or calculated. The monitoring features are applied to a prediction matrix that outputs probabilities of abnormal operation within one or more prediction time horizons. If the output probabilities exceed a threshold probability, then an alert can be output. Maintenance can be automatically scheduled in response to the alert.

An example method for manufacturing a multicellular structure for acoustic damping is described that includes applying a porogen material to a solid support, inserting a multicellular frame into the solid support and through the porogen material so as to fill cells of the multicellular frame with the porogen material, fusing the porogen material, removing the multicellular frame from the solid support, and the multicellular frame contains a suspended fused porogen network attached to walls of the cells of the multicellular frame. The method also includes applying a solution to the suspended fused porogen network in the cells of the multicellular frame to percolate the suspended fused porogen network, curing the solution, and removing the suspended fused porogen network from the multicellular frame resulting in porous septum membranes of the cured solution in cells of the multicellular frame.

Systems and methods for indicating the health of brakes on an aircraft or a ground vehicle. One method for monitoring brake health calculates the ratio of input energy to output energy during braking. The input energy is a function of commanded brake force and speed. The output energy may be measured by measuring the increase in temperature or the actual brake force over time during brake application. When using brake temperatures, the temperatures in a pair of brakes may optionally be compared. If the respective measured temperatures of the two brakes differ by an amount that exceeds a specified threshold, the system produces an indication that one brake may require repair or replacement. Variability due to operational and environmental factors that affect measured temperature can be reduced by comparing the measured brake temperatures for one brake with selected brake temperature data collected from the same brake during other landings under similar conditions.

A sound-attenuating composite structure may comprise a honeycomb core assembly having a plurality of honeycomb cells defined by sidewalls, wherein the honeycomb core assembly is sandwiched between an inner impervious skin and a perforated outer skin. The sound-attenuating composite structure may further comprise a ceramic foam insert received in each of the honeycomb cells at a predetermined insertion depth to form an obstruction therein. Each of the ceramic foam inserts may have a predetermined thickness defined between substantially flat top and bottom surfaces. The sound-attenuating composite structure may have predetermined acoustic performance characteristic that are controlled, at least in part, by the predetermined thickness and the predetermined insertion depth.

A synthetic magnetodielectric composite material for absorbing electromagnetic radiation has a sheet of fabric having first and second surfaces. The fabric is formed of an insulating material. Magnetically permeable thread is disposed within the fabric. The magnetically permeable thread comprises a material having a permeability substantially greater than the permeability of free space. The fabric is impregnated with resin. The magnetically permeable thread is configured to provide predetermined permittivity and permeability within a selected frequency range, so as to provide desired absorption/transmission of electromagnetic radiation.

A composite electromagnetic absorber provides increased EMR absorption while being thinner and/or lighter than prior art EMR absorbers. To accomplish this, synthetic dielectric materials are combined with either synthetic magnetic materials or magnetically lossy materials in such a way that the permittivity and permeability of the composite material are substantially matched over the desired range of frequency. The match in the permittivity and permeability allows the majority of the electromagnetic fields to enter the material where the electric and magnetic loss components absorb the electromagnetic energy.

An R-foam having a surface with an electrically resistive ink layer that is continuous and an electrically conductive ink layer that is in a predetermined pattern. The resulting surface is thereby electrically modified to have a predetermined resistive taper across it according to a predetermined resistivity curve. The method of manufacturing the R-foam involves printing the ink layers to the surface in a predetermined pattern that results in the predetermined resistivity curve. The ink layers may be applied using silk screening, stamping, and ink jet printing techniques.

A method of constructing a honeycomb structure generally undetectable by radar. The method includes winding first and second sheets of radar absorbent material onto a central roller. A first printer prints a plurality of parallel adhesive linear deposits on the first sheet of material as it passes across the first printer. A second printer prints a plurality of parallel adhesive linear deposits on the second sheet of material as it passes across the second printer. The first and second linear deposits are offset with respect to each other. The first and second sheet materials overlap one another during winding onto the central roller. Once the first and second sheets are overlapped onto one another, the adhesive deposits secure sheets together to form a non-expanded honeycomb structure. The non-expanded honeycomb structure is removed from the central roller and is expanded to form the expanded honeycomb structure.
