A method for improving reliability of Voice over LTE (VoLTE)/Video over LTE (ViLTE) calls includes detecting, by a User Equipment (UE) camped on a first Radio Access Technology (RAT), a problem with a radio connection on the first RAT at a first time. After detecting the problem with the radio connection, the UE blocks Non-Access Stratum (NAS) registration on a second RAT in a time period between the first time and a second time later than the first time. The second RAT is different than the first RAT.

Reliability of VoLTE/ViLTE calls

Methods, mobile stations and networks are provided that cause a packet data service reconnect to be performed automatically after the occurrence of an event triggering registration, even in some circumstances where such a data service reconnect would not normally occur. This avoids complications that can arise due to the packet data service being discontinued upon registration and the resulting inability to reach the mobile station.

A method and apparatus of optimizing transitioning between EVDO and CDMA 1X systems in a hybrid access terminal, the method having the steps of: preventing a reconnect data call from being sent from the hybrid access terminal. In one embodiment, a scheme is disclosed for managing network traffic load upon outage of a network node disposed in a wireless packet data network, wherein the network node is adapted to serve a substantially large number of mobile nodes using respective data connections. Upon encountering an outage-causing condition, the network node releases the data connections and generates session termination messages for transmission to the mobile nodes. Responsive to receiving the session termination messages, the mobile nodes variably delay their data session reconnect requests based on randomization.

Apparatus, and an associated method, for facilitating routing of data in a packet radio communication system. A clone list is downloaded to the mobile node and stored at a clone list depository thereat. The clone list includes a plurality of entries, each of which provides routing information needed to route data when the mobile node is positioned within coverage areas encompassed by differing networks. A determination is made whether the clone list includes appropriate routing information to route a data packet sent by the mobile node positioned in a particular area encompassed by a particular network portion. If the clone list includes an entry containing such information, the need separately to request such information is obviated.

Techniques for controlling wireless network operations associated with a flow control process of a wireless network involving a data session established between a mobile station and a service node. The network processor examines quality of service (QoS) data associated with the data session. The network processor causes the flow control process to be bypassed for the mobile station based on the QoS data indicating that the data session is associated with a predetermined traffic class (e.g. background traffic class). This serves to prohibit the flow control process from stopping the flow of data packets in the data session without terminating the data session based on detection of an out-of-coverage condition. Otherwise, the network processor allows the flow control process to be performed for the mobile station based on the QoS data indicating that the data session is not associated with the predetermined traffic class.

Methods and apparatus for controlling wireless network operations associated with a flow control process

A method and apparatus for user data traffic handling for an EVDO enabled hybrid mode mobile device, the method having the steps of: blocking a system selection at the mobile device until no EVDO traffic state exists, the blocking step includes either monitoring whether a user changes a scan mode on the mobile device; and if the user changes the scan mode, checking whether the mobile device is in an EVDO traffic state; and if yes delaying a system selection until the EVDO traffic state is ended, or monitoring whether a user is in an EVDO traffic state, and if yes, preventing a user from accessing a scan mode menu on the mobile device.

In accordance with the teachings described herein, systems and methods are provided for always-on wireless IP communication. An access provider network (APN) that includes an always-on packet data serving node (PDSN) may be used to communicate over a wireless communication link with a mobile station. The PDSN may include an inactivity timer and may be used to set the inactivity timer to an inactivity timer starting value and send a starting value estimate to the mobile station over the wireless communication link, wherein the starting value estimate is a function of the inactivity timer starting value. The mobile station may include an inactivity timer estimate and may be used to receive the starting value estimate and set the inactivity timer estimate to the starting value estimate. The mobile station may also be used to reset the inactivity timer estimate to the starting value estimate when the mobile station communicates with the APN.

A mobile device is engaged in a connected data service via a wireless network. The connected data service utilizes a radio traffic channel established between the mobile device and the wireless network and a data session for communicating data. While engaged in the service, the mobile device receives via a user interface a voice call request for initiating a voice call. In response to the request, the mobile device permits the initiation of the voice call. Specifically, the mobile device causes the radio traffic channel for the connected data service to be torn down without terminating the data session. The mobile device also causes the voice call to be established and maintained over a new radio traffic channel via the wireless network while the data session for the data service is maintained.

A system and method for establishing and maintaining an 'always-on' data connection to a wireless network through the use of a back off timer and a service check timer is disclosed. The back off timer is initialized to a determined value when a connection is not established. When the timer expires, a connection attempt is made. As further connection attempts are made, the back off timer is set to ever-increasing values. When the data connection is established, the service check timer is initialized. The data connection status is determined at the expiry of the service check timer. When, at the expiry of the service check timer, the data connection is determined to be lost, the connection method is employed.

Method and system for maintaining a wireless data connection

A voice call request for a voice call involving the mobile device is received in a wireless network while the mobile device is engaged in a connected data communication service via the wireless network. The service utilizes a radio traffic channel between the mobile device and the wireless network and a data session for communication of data. In response to the receiving of the voice call request, the wireless network causes the radio traffic channel for the service to be torn down without terminating the data session. The wireless network also causes a voice call involving the mobile device to be established and maintained over a new radio traffic channel via the wireless network while the data session for the service is maintained. Subsequently, the wireless network identifies an indication that the voice call involving the mobile device has ended and, in response, resumes the communication of the data in the data session over a radio traffic channel.
