Gel formation is prevented in the reaction between a sulfonyl-chloride-containing resin and a polyamine by first forming an adduct between the resin with an aminophenol. The prevention of gel formation enables sulfonyl-chloride containing resin to be used in admixture with acrylates and epoxy resin to form a polyamine-curable adhesive composition having excellent adhesive properties and chemical resistance.

A primer for flame sprayed polyolefin comprises an epoxy resin, preferably of low molecular weight and/or low viscosity; and an amine hardener, part of which becomes highly reactive on exposure to open flame, providing near instant cure of the composition under flame spray conditions. The invention is unique that it provides strong adhesion to steel, even where the surface preparation is less than ideal, as well as to concrete and other substrates. The primer eliminates the need to preheat the substrate. The primer has strong adhesion to the topcoat polyolefinic material, especially to a functionalized topcoat. The composition withstands open flame and does not char under polyolefin flame spray conditions, nor does it run or sag, and it is not prone to failure as it cools after the application of the polyolefin.

Polyisobutylene (PIB) functionalized with terminal reactive unsaturation is disclosed. Carbocationically polymerized monohalogen-terminated PIB is dehydrohalogenated in a hydrocarbon solvent using an alkoxide of the formula RO-M wherein R is alkyl of at least 5 carbon atoms and M is alkali metal. The PIB obtained has terminal unsaturation which is 100% in the reactive 'exo' form which can be converted to succinic anhydride groups (PIB-SA) by the ene reaction with maleic anhydride. The PIB-SA is reactive with amine functional dendrimers to obtain a star-branched polymer having a dendrimer core and PIB branches joined by succinimide linkages. Blends of the star-branched polymer with polypropylene have improved energy absorption properties and controllable moisture/oxygen permeabilities useful in films.

A unique adhesive composition consisting of two parts, a resin and a curing agent, is disclosed. The composition has good adhesion to chemically inert substrates, both flexible and rigid. It is useful for sealing discontinuity in concrete slabs, tanks, decks, pipe lining or combinations thereof.

There is provided a method of introducing ethylenically unsaturated functionality, into an alkylstyrene homopolymer or copolymer with an isoolefin, at the alkylbenzyl carbon atom comprising the steps of: forming a solution of the polymer in a hydrocarbon solvent; adding to the polymer solution an alkali metal (Na, K, Rb, Cs) alkoxide and an alkyl lithium compound to form a solution of a metalated intermediate; and adding a halodialkylalkenyl silane to the metalated polymer solution. Also provided are the ethylenically unsaturated functionalized polymer derivatives made by the method, and the crosslinked derivatives thereof.

There is provided a method of introducing functionality into a copolymer of an isoolefin and an alkylstyrene at the alkylbenzyl carbon atom comprising the steps of: forming a solution of said copolymer in a hydrocarbon solvent; adding to said polymer solution an alkali metal Cs, K, Na alkoxide and an alkyl lithium compound to form a superbase with the polymer solution; and adding an electrophile to said base polymer solution also provided are the metalated copolymers and the functionalized derivative therefrom.

This invention provides a method by which an alkylstyrene containing polymer may be exclusively functionalized at the primary benzylic carbon site of the styrenic monomer. The process of this invention comprises the treatment of an alkylstyrene containing polymer dissolved in a non-polar liquid medium with an organic hydroperoxide oxidizing reagent in the presence of a catalytically sufficient amount of a chromium compound, to oxidize a portion of the aromatic alkyl groups of the polymer to an oxygen containing functional group.
