A method for power management of a storage system unit, the method may include selecting a power reduction measure out of (a) a shutdown of at least one stateless compute node out of stateless compute nodes of the storage system unit, and (b) an other power reduction measure that does not involve the shutdown of the at least one stateless compute node, while prioritizing the shutdown of the at least one stateless compute node over the other power reduction measure; wherein the storage system unit further comprises storage nodes; wherein states related to communications with client computers (i) are maintained in the storage nodes, and (ii) are not stored on the stateless compute nodes; and applying the power reduction measure based on the selecting.

Techniques for improved erasure coding in distributed storage systems

A system and method for transaction management. The system includes a processing circuitry; and a memory, the memory containing instructions that, when executed by the processing circuitry, configure the system to: assign a transaction identifier (ID) to a transaction, wherein the transaction includes at least one modification to at least one object stored in a storage system, each object having a persistent state, wherein the transaction ID indicates a state of the transaction, wherein the state of the transaction initially indicates that the transaction is in progress; modify the at least one object, wherein the modifying further comprises adding at least one conditional entry to each object, wherein each conditional entry includes one of the at least one modification that is conditional on the state of the transaction; and update the transaction ID when a termination event occurs, wherein the updating further includes changing the state of the transaction.

A computer-implemented method for efficient data storage is provided. A first storage medium associates data stored on one or more data storage media with a unique identification value (ID) for the purpose of determining de-duplication status of the data. In response to receiving a request to read the data from a logical address, the first storage medium retrieves the data from a second storage medium based on the unique ID. In response to receiving a request to write the data to a logical address, the one or more data storage media store at least one copy of the data based on the de-duplication status of the data.

A method, comprising: during a normal operating mode of a first solid-state storage device, reserving a portion of an available physical storage space of the first solid-state storage device, giving rise to a reserved portion and a user data portion; setting a user data capacity of the first solid-state storage device according to a size of the user data portion; using substantially the entire available physical storage space for storing user data within the first solid-state storage device; and upon receiving at the first solid-state storage device an instruction to switch to a data protection mode, switching the first solid-state storage device to the data protection mode and allocating part of the reserved portion to the user data portion, giving rise to an extended user data portion, and using the added user data capacity for backing up data that is or was stored on the second solid-state storage device.

A method for synchronizing data storage systems is provided. The method comprises designating a relationship between a first data storage system and a second data storage system, such that data stored in the first data storage system is copied to the second data storage system, in response to determining that the data stored in the first data storage system has been modified; receiving a first request to modify data stored in a first data block of a first storage volume in the first data storage system, wherein the data block is modified according to the first request; determining that the first data block has not been successfully synchronized when the modified data stored in the first data block is not copied to the second data storage system; and executing a process to retry synchronization of the first data block until synchronization of the first data block is successful, without suspending the relationship while the process is executed.

Synchronizing data storage systems in a data storage environment

A method for improving performance in a storage system is provided. The method comprises receiving a request to destage a partial stride of data from a storage cache; reserving space for a full stride of data on one or more storage devices; allocating the partial stride of data to the reserved space; adding padding for unallocated blocks, wherein the unallocated blocks are reserved for future updates; and destaging the full stride of data to the storage devices, wherein the full stride of data comprises the allocated partial stride of data and the padded unallocated blocks.

Improving performance in a cache mechanism by way of destaging data in partial strides

A method for software processing includes obtaining change information, which records changes that have been performed in respective locations in software code. The change information is processed so as to assign to at least some of the locations respective priorities, which are indicative of respective likelihoods that the locations contain program faults.
