A method for treatment of irritation or damage to corneal or conjunctival epithelial cells, particularly for irritation or damage to corneal or conjunctival epithelial cells due to severe Sj&#xf6;gren's syndrome, comprising applying topically to an affected eye an aqueous solution of glycerol characterized by a glycerol concentration of &#x3e;1% (w/v), most preferably 2.5% (w/v). The method is effective even in the case of very low tear formation, and its effectiveness cannot be explained by the known humectant effect of glycerol.

The present invention provides a method of treatment of irritation of skin or mucous cells. The method comprises applying topically a composition comprising a combination of: xylitol, myonisotiol or mannitol or any combination of these; glycerol and/or urea; water; in the absence of any oil in water or wax in water emulsion.

Method of treatment of irritation of skin or mucous cells

A topical pharmaceutical or cosmetic composition for treatment of irritation of mucous cells such as mucosal cells of the eye, nose, and vagina is disclosed. The composition comprises an aqueous solution of at least one polyol selected from the group consisting of xylitol, myoinositol and mannitol and at least one substance selected from the group consisting of glycerol and urea. The composition contains less than 0.01% inorganic salt and is free of any oil-in-water or wax-in-water emulsion. In particularly preferred embodiments, the composition comprises an aqueous solution containing 1.5-5% (w/v) xylitol and 0.9-2.0% (w/v) glycerol.

Topical compositions for treatment of irritation of mucous membranes

An ophthalmic preparation and method, usable to treat conjunctivochalasis. The ophthalmic preparation comprises an aqueous solution of glycerol. The preparation may also include additional components including high molecular weight polymers for viscosity control and pharmacologically active substances. The method includes administering an ophthalmic preparation including an aqueous solution of glycerol to a patient.

Eye drops for treatment of conjunctivochalasis

There are provided pharmaceutical compositions for intranasal application for the alleviation of nasal discomforts, like 'dry nose syndrome' and for the treatment of a variety of diseases. These are based on the combination of an isotonic humectant solution and a high molecular weight polymer which provides the required viscosity. Preferred compositions have a non-Newtonian viscosity profile. The composition can contain one or more pharmaceutically active ingredient.

Method of the treatment of dry nose syndrome

Isotonic humectant eyedrops which have pronounced non-Newtonian rheological properties, simulating the rheological behavior of human tears. The eyedrops are of value in the treatment of various abnormal states of the eye such as dry eye syndrome. They can also serve as carrier for a variety of pharmaceutically active ingredients. Essential components are in combination water, an anionic polymer having a M.W. in the 500,000 to about 4,000,000 range at a concentration so that the viscosity measured at a 1 sec.sup.-1 shear rate does not exceed about 150 cp. and a low molecular weight (of 500 or less M.W.) humectant polyol at a concentration of about isotonicity or slightly above. The solution must contain less than about 1.5 mM salt calculated as sodium chloride, not including the salts of the anionic polymeric viscosity enhancer, as higher concentrations destroy the non-Newtonian rheological properties. A process for treating dry eye syndrome by application of such eyedrops.

Eyedrops having non-Newtonian rheological properties

Cosmetic and dermatological compositions containing 1.alpha.-hydroxycholeciferol and a suitable carrier useful in topical treatment of skin disorders and methods employing same are disclosed. Compositions containing 1.alpha.,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol and a suitable carrier and methods employing same are also disclosed for dermatological and cosmetic uses. Various formulations of the compositions including creams, lotions, ointments and sprays are disclosed for use in accordance with this invention. The compositions and formulations may contain additional active ingredients.

Compositions containing 1.alpha.-hydroxycholecalciferol for topical

The present invention relates to pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions for use as sex stimulants for mammals which comprise an active ingredient phenylethylamine substituted in the ortho or in the meta position by a methoxy group, a methylthio group, by a chlorine atom or by a bromine atom, as well as salts and complexes of these compounds. The invention further relates to the ortho- and meta- methoxyphenylethylamine and methylthiophenylethylamine compounds and to their salts and complexes as novel compounds.

The present invention relates to novel compounds of the general formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is --H or --CO--alk, wherein alk is lower alkyl of 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is 1,1-dimethylheptyl or 1,2-dimethylheptyl, Q is --CH.sub.3 when A------B is a single bond, and Q is --CH.sub.2 OR.sup.4 when A------B is a double bond, and R.sup.4 is --H or --CO--alk where alk is lower alkyl of 1 to inclusive 5 carbon atoms. The invention relates both to the isomeric mixtures and to the individual isomers of the above compounds. Furthermore the invention relates to pharmaceutical compositions containing a compound defined above as active ingredient. The pharmaceutical compositions are of value as central nervous system depressants, as sedatives, as tranquilizers, as anticonvulsant agents, as effective agents against migraine, for the treatment of glaucoma, as antidiarrheal agents and as antiinflammatory agents. The invention also relates to a process for the production of the above compounds and pharmaceutical compositions.

Pinene derivatives and pharmaceutical compositions containing the same

The invention relates to a novel device for measuring in a quantitative manner surface properties, especially of tissues such as human skin, comprising a probe to be placed on said surface, means for applying a predetermined weight to said surface via said probe, means for removing the weight and means for measuring the change of height against time of the surface when the weight is removed. The probe may also be applied by suction and a force may be applied to it, tending to lift it from said surface, determining the change of height of the surface when said force is applied. The invention further relates to a method for determining surface properties, and especially elasticity, compressibility, viscosity, humidity and stretchability of human skin and for determining the effects of various cosmetic preparations on human skin.

A pharmaceutical composition of matter substantially devoid of 'cannabis-e' CNS activity containing as active ingredient a compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein A-----B designates a 1(2) or a 6(1) double bond and wherein R' designates --H or --CO--R where R is lower alkyl, and R' designates alkyl and novel compounds of the 3S,4S configuration of the formula ##STR2## wherein A----B designates a 1(2) or a 6(1) double bond, R' designates hydrogen or --CO--R where --R is lower alkyl, and R' designates alkyl of at least 6 carbon atoms.
