Electrolytes are described with additives that provide good shelf life with improved cycling stability properties. The electrolytes can provide appropriate high voltage stability for high capacity positive electrode active materials. The core electrolyte generally can comprise from about 1.1M to about 2.5M lithium electrolyte salt and a solvent that consists essentially of fluoroethylene carbonate and/or ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate and optionally no more than about 40 volume percent methyl ethyl carbonate, and wherein the lithium electrolyte salt is selected from the group consisting of LiPF, LiBFand combinations thereof. Desirable stabilizing additives include, for example, dimethyl methylphosphonate, thiophene or thiophene derivatives, and/or LiF with an anion complexing agent.

Electrolytes for stable cycling of high capacity lithium based batteries

The disclosed technology relates to a battery utilizing a dampening layer to prevent a failure of the battery. The battery includes an enclosure, a set of electrodes enclosed within the enclosure, and a dampening layer disposed within the set of electrodes. The dampening layer partitions the set of electrodes into a first subset of electrodes and a second subset of electrodes. The dampening layer is configured to absorb a mechanical impact on the enclosure to prevent a failure of at least one of the first subset of electrodes and the second subset of electrodes. The dampening layer may be formed at least one of a polymer, metal, and ceramic.

Battery designs are provided that exhibit commercially suitable cycling properties for consumer electronics with silicon based active materials in the electrodes. The batteries can have stacked or wound electrodes and suitable electrode designs.

The disclosed technology relates to a set of battery tabs. The battery tabs include a first tab forming an elongated member, a second tab forming an elongated member, and a unitary seal surrounding a portion of the respective elongated members of the first tab and the second tab. The unitary seal spaces the first tab apart from the second tab to create a gap between the first tab and the second tab. The first tab and second tab each connect to respective electrodes enclosed within a pouch of a battery cell to allow the cell's energy to be transferred to an external component.

The disclosed technology relates to electrodes of a battery cell. The electrodes include a current collector having a first non-rectangular shape, an active coated region having a second non-rectangular shape, an insulator coated region having a third non-rectangular shape, and an uncoated tab disposed adjacent to the insulator coated region. The insulator coated region is disposed along a periphery of the current collector along a plurality of sides or edges of the current collector providing several locations for the tab to be positioned.

Supplemental lithium can be used to stabilize lithium ion batteries with lithium rich metal oxides as the positive electrode active material. Dramatic improvements in the specific capacity at long cycling have been obtained. The supplemental lithium can be provided with the negative electrode, or alternatively as a sacrificial material that is subsequently driven into the negative electrode active material. The supplemental lithium can be provided to the negative electrode active material prior to assembly of the battery using electrochemical deposition. The positive electrode active materials can comprise a layered-layered structure comprising manganese as well as nickel and/or cobalt.

The disclosed technology relates to a battery cell that includes a battery can having a receptacle and a cover. The battery cell also includes multiple electrode layers that are disposed within the receptacle, wherein a first layer of the plurality of electrode layers is coupled to the cover, and a second layer of the plurality of electrode layers is coupled to the receptacle. In some aspects, the cover includes a conductive feedthrough having a vent. A battery-powered device and method of manufacturing a battery cell are also provided.

This disclosure relates to a battery and a method for its manufacture. An example method includes forming an anode comprising silicon monoxide and a forming a cathode comprising lithium cobalt oxide. The method also includes arranging the anode, the cathode, and a separator in a layered arrangement. The method further includes winding the layered arrangement to form a wound arrangement, compressing the wound arrangement, and packing it into a pouch. The method yet further includes soaking the wound arrangement in an electrolyte for a predetermined time and at a predetermined temperature. The electrolyte includes a lithium hexafluorophosphate salt dissolved in a solvent including ethylene carbonate and diethylene carbonate in about a 1:2 volume ratio. The additive includes fluoroethylene carbonate in an 8-12% weight ratio.

High specific capacity lithium rich lithium metal oxide materials are coated with inorganic compositions, such as metal fluorides, to improve the performance of the materials as a positive electrode active material. The resulting coated material can exhibit an increased specific capacity, and the material can also exhibit improved cycling. The materials can be formed while maintaining a desired relatively high average voltage such that the materials are suitable for the formation of commercial batteries. Suitable processes are described for the synthesis of the desired coated compositions that can be adapted for commercial production.

Coated positive electrode materials for lithium ion batteries

Battery formation protocols are used to perform initial charging of batteries with lithium rich high capacity positive electrode to result a more stable battery structure. The formation protocol generally comprises three steps, an initial charge step, a rest period under an open circuit and a subsequent charge step to a selected partial activation voltage. The subsequent or second charge voltage is selected to provide for a desired degree of partial activation of the positive electrode active material to achieve a desired specific capacity while providing for excellent stability with cycling. The formation protocol is particularly effective to stabilize cycling for compositions with moderate lithium enrichment.

Batteries with particularly high energy capacity and low internal impedance have been described herein. The batteries can exhibit extraordinary long cycling with acceptable low amounts of fade. Pouch batteries using high specific capacity lithium rich metal oxide as positive electrode material combined with graphitic carbon anode can reach an energy density of at least about 180 Wh/kg at a rate of C/3 from 4.35V to 2V at room temperature while having a room temperature areas specific DC resistance of no more than about 75 ohms-cmat 20% SOC based on a full charge to 4.35V. High specific capacity lithium rich metal oxide with specific stoichiometry ranges used in these batteries are disclosed.
