A system for determining postage rates, said system comprising a lever mounted to pivot about a pivot axis, a wheel disposed at one end of the lever and in contact, at rest, with a conveyor surface on which a mail item is conveyed, measurement means disposed at the other end of the lever for the purpose of measuring the angular displacement of said lever while the mail item is being conveyed and for the purpose of delivering a signal representative of the amplitude of said displacement, and a processor unit connected to the measurement means for determining the thickness of the mail item, the measurement means comprising an encoder provided with a plurality of openings, each of which corresponds to a determined threshold for a postage rate, which openings are distributed over a circular arc over an annular portion and are suitable for going past a stationary sensor comprising an emitter for emitting a light ray and a receiver for receiving said light ray, the processor unit being suitable for counting the number of openings through which said light ray passes as said wheel passes over said mail item, and for deducing from said number the postage rate corresponding to said mail item.

System for determining postage rates on the basis of the thickness of the mail items

A mechanical device for measuring the width L of a mail item on the fly in a mail handling machine in which mail items are caused to move along a mail item conveyor path, parallel to a reference wall; said mechanical device comprising a device for detecting a leading edge of a mail item, a downstream lever disposed across the mail item conveyor path and forming a determined angle relative to said reference wall, a device for detecting said downstream lever moving as the leading edge of the mail item goes past, a device for determining a movement distance over which the leading edge of the mail item moves between the device for detecting a leading edge of a mail item and a point of activation at which said leading edge activates said downstream lever, which point of activation is determined by the device for detecting the downstream lever moving, and a computation device for computing the width L of the mail item on the basis of said movement distance.

A water feed device for feeding water to a moistener for moistening envelope flaps, which moistener is incorporated into a mail handling machine, the water feed device including a water tank which is mounted on a support and from which a quantity of water flows through a water feed pipe to a water reservoir in which part of a piece of foam is dipped, the quantity of water serving to impregnate the piece of foam for moistening the envelope flaps as they pass between a top surface of the piece of foam and a moistener brush, the water tank support being tilted at a determined angle &#x3b2; relative to a horizontal reference plane, and the water tank itself being tilted at a determined angle &#x3b8; relative to the water tank support.

Water feed device for a moistener of a mail handling machine

A device for measuring the width L of a mail item on the fly in a mail handling machine in which mail items are caused to move parallel to a reference wall, the device comprising: a detector device rendered active when the presence of a mail item passing over a plurality of levers is detected, said levers being disposed at a determined set pitch perpendicularly to said reference wall; an emitter device for emitting a light ray, which emitter device is disposed facing a first lever of said plurality; a receiver device for receiving said light ray; a measurement device for measuring the light intensity of the light ray received at said receiver device; and a processor device for computing a determined number y of levers activated by said mail item going past, on the basis of a comparison between said measurement of the received light intensity and an initial measurement of the light intensity of the light ray received at said receiver device when no mail items pass over said plurality of levers, the width L of a mail item being determined on the basis of the number y of levers activated by the mail item going past.
