A surveillance camera system includes a camera that acquires images and that has an adjustable field of view. A processing device is operably coupled to the camera. The processing device allows a user to define a virtual mask within the acquired images. The processing device also tracks a moving object of interest in the acquired images with a reduced level of regard for areas of the acquired images that are within the virtual mask.

Creating a background model for image processing to identify new foreground objects in successive video frames. A method includes providing a background image in a user interface. The method further includes receiving a first user input in the user interface that comprises an identification of one or more different regions within the background image. The method further includes receiving a second user input in the user interface that comprises a selection of an image change tolerance for each of the identified different regions. The method further includes providing the background image, information identifying the different regions, and the image change tolerances to an image processor. The background image, the information identifying the different regions, and the image change tolerances are used by the image processor to create a background model to thereby compare a successive image with the background model in order to identify foreground objects within the successive image.

A method of operating a video surveillance system includes providing a PTZ camera within a housing. A fisheye lens camera is attached to the housing such that the fisheye lens camera has a panoramic field of view that is unobstructed by the housing. The panoramic field of view is centered on a panning axis of the PTZ camera. The fisheye lens camera is rotated about the panning axis. A first image within the panoramic field of view is captured by using the fisheye lens camera. A location of an object of interest within the captured first image is identified. PTZ commands are transmitted to the PTZ camera such that the PTZ camera is oriented to capture a second image of the object of interest at the identified location. The PTZ commands are compensated for a rotation of the field of view of the fisheye lens camera during the rotation of the fisheye lens camera.

A system including a camera, display screen and processing device. A privacy mask obscures a portion of the displayed images. The processing device transforms the privacy mask in accordance with changes in the field of view of the camera, wherein, in a first field of view, the privacy mask is defined by a plurality of vertices having coordinates (x1, y1), . . . (xn, yn), and, in a second field of view, the processing device determines transformed coordinates, (x1', y1&#x2032;), . . . (xn&#x2032;, yn&#x2032;), for each of the vertices based upon changes in the field of view of the camera. The privacy mask is definable by pixel rows and the processing device identifies opposing ends of a plurality of the pixel rows, each of the identified ends defining one vertex of the privacy mask. The privacy mask may also include an unmasked area completely encircled by masked area.

Embodiments of the invention relate to a dome camera assembly that is able to ensure repeatability. The dome camera assembly includes a nonvolatile storage mechanism including a stored video image and a corresponding stored camera position. The assembly may further include an image capturing device for capturing a current video image after the camera moves to the stored camera position. An image processing component compares the current video image with the stored video image and determines an offset amount between the current video image and the stored video image. An adjustment mechanism adjusts a current camera position in accordance with the determined offset amount to facilitate repeatability.

A video image stabilization system includes a camera having an image capturing device capturing a video image. The camera has a selectively adjustable field of view. A processing device is operably coupled to the camera. The processing device receives signals indicative of the field of view of the camera and images captured by the camera. The processing device automatically tracks movements of at least one object in the images. The processing device determines a stabilizing adjustment for the video image as a function of an unintended change in the field of view of the camera during a time interval between capture of a first image and capture of a second image. The determining is based upon the signals indicative of the field of view and an analysis of the first and second images.

Image stabilization system and method for a video camera

A video image stabilization system including a camera having an image capturing device configured to capture a video image. The camera has a selectively adjustable field of view and at least one processing device is operably coupled to the system wherein the processing device receives signals indicative of the field of view of the camera and images captured by the camera. The processing device sequentially grabs a first and second image. The processing device determines a stabilizing adjustment for the video image as a function of an intended change in the field of view of the camera during the interval between the capture of the first and second images based upon the signals indicative of the field of view and an analysis of the first and second images. A portion of each image captured by the camera is selected for display. The selected display portion is less than the entire captured image and the stabilizing adjustment determined by the processing device involves adjusting the relative location of the selected display portion within the captured image.
