A fiber optic test device is provided that includes a light source pigtailed with a first end of a non-bend insensitive multimode fiber (non-BIMMF). A second end of the non-BIMMF is fusion spliced to a first end of a reference grade bend insensitive multimode fiber (BIMMF). A reference grade optical fiber connector is attached to a second end of the BIMMF, which is coupled to a first end of a reference grade bulkhead adapter. The non-BIMMF is deformed so that a specific launch condition, such as encircled flux, is achieved at the first end of the BIMMF. A test reference cord, which contains a reference grade BIMMF having similar geometric properties as the BIMMF that is fusion spliced to the non-BIMMF, is attached to a second end of the bulkhead adapter. Modal transparency is achieved and the launch condition is maintained at the output of the test reference cord.

Modal launch condition using bend-insensitive multimode fiber

An integrating sphere-equipped optical measurement device and optical connector polarity and type identification and loss measurement are provided. The optical measurement device receives one or more optical signals that respectively emanate from one or more optical fibers of a plurality of optical fibers of an optical fiber cable. The optical measurement device determines one or more respective positions where the one or more optical signals impinged on a sensor. The optical measurement device determines based on the one or more positions, one or more receiving positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively. The optical measurement device determines a polarity of the optical fiber cable based on both the one or more receiving positions and one or more or transmitting positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively.

Optical connector polarity and loss measurement using an integrating sphere-equipped optical measurement device

An optical testing device is provided. The testing device includes a position sensing detector (PSD) having an optical sensing area that is optically responsive to a first range of wavelengths. The PSD receives a plurality of optical signals having wavelengths within the first range and emitted through a respective plurality of optical fibers and detects a plurality of positions where the optical signals impinged on the optical sensing area for determining array polarity. The PSD receives a plurality of first optical signals having wavelengths within the first range and detects the polarity and a plurality of optical intensities of the first optical signals. The testing device includes a photodetector that is optically responsive to a second range of wavelengths different than the first range. The photodetector receives a plurality of second optical signals within the second range and detects a plurality of optical intensities of the second optical signals.

Measuring optical array polarity, power, and loss using a position sensing detector and photodetector-equipped optical testing device

An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is provided. The OTDR emits a first optical signal that is an impulse optical signal having a non-zero power during a first period of time, where the first period of time is shorter than a period of time necessary for the first optical signal to traverse a length of an optical fiber under test. The OTDR emits a second optical signal that is an impulse optical signal having a non-zero power during a second period of time longer than a period of time necessary for the second optical signal to traverse the length of the optical fiber. The OTDR receives data representative of a third and fourth optical signals that are reflections of the first and second optical signals, respectively, by the optical fiber and generates an optical time-domain reflectometry signal based at least in part on the third and fourth optical signals.

The optical measurement device receives one or more optical signals that respectively emanate from one or more optical fibers of a plurality of optical fibers of an optical fiber cable. The optical measurement device captures one or more images of the one or more optical signals and determines, based on the one or more images, one or more receiving positions of the one or more optical signals, respectively.

The laser output fiber pigtail is fusion spliced to a singlemode coupler whose output is coupled to the instrument bulkhead connector. A PIN photodiode is fusion spliced to the singlemode coupler to receive the reflected light from the fiber under test. The high resolution hand-held instrument is useful in examining singlemode passive optical networks (PON).
