A method and device for determining available communication sub-channels in an OFDM communication system is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of transmitting, on at least one first sub-channel, information regarding sub-channels available for a first transmission of at least one first data packet, receiving, on at least one second sub-channel, information regarding sub-channels available for a second transmission, determining at least one set of available sub-channels based on the information regarding the first and second transmissions. In one aspect of the invention, at least one set of the determined available sub-channels is further provided to a receiving system. The information is being provided in a separate transmission, or within a data packet, or within each subsequent data packet or in selected data packets.

Handshaking method and apparatus for OFDM systems with unknown sub-channel availability

The system, apparatus and method of the present invention provides a single carrier block transmission with guard interval as a means of communications over multi-path channels that enables frequency domain equalization, and therefore, has many of the advantages of OFDM, but does not have some of the drawbacks such as high PAPR and the need for high resolution ADCs. While the use of guard intervals in single carrier communications enables low complexity detection of the signal, it reduces bandwidth efficiency. The present invention improves the bandwidth efficiency by adjusting the length of the guard interval adaptively. Also, by allowing both time-domain and frequency domain equalizations, besides improving bandwidth efficiency, the inventions allows for great flexibility in receiver design.

System, apparatus, and method for single-carrier block transmission with adaptive guard interval

A single carrier modulation scheme suitable for use in high frequency communication systems is provided that achieves improved residual frequency error and phase noise estimation. At a transmitter, cyclically orthogonal constant amplitude pilot signals are inserted at the beginning (or end) of a plurality of SCBT blocks of a block coded data stream. At a receiver, a phase rotation of the received data stream is determined to remove a residual frequency error or to estimate the phase noise.

A system and method for efficient transmission of different types of source data in the same packet, hence, enabling efficient transmission of multimedia and data content with unequal error protection are provided. The present packet structure is defined wherein the packet consists of a number of segments or payloads. The packet includes a field indicative of a number of payloads included in the packet; and at least one data field for each payload in the packet, the at least one data field defining at least one characteristic of the payload. The at least one data field includes a length of the payload, modulation and coding scheme, existence of a frame check sum (FCS), and existence of a midamble. The at least one data field may further include a continuation element indicative of whether two consecutive payloads are portions of a same data frame.

System and method for efficient transmission of multimedia and data

A wireless device () communicates in a wireless system by selecting a communication channel () for communication, identifying a control channel or control channels () designated for communication of control information for the selected communication channel, and listening for the control information () on the control channel to determine if the selected communication channel is bonded with any other communication channel. When control information is received via the control channel(s) indicating that the selected communication channel is bonded with at least one other communication channel, then the wireless device abstains from communication on the selected communication channel, or communicates in a narrowband mode. The system (), transmitter (), receiver (), and method of the present invention provide a technique to code data bits into symbols using TCM, MLCM or BIMLCM before the symbols are placed in an SCBT block. Generally, TCM, MLCM, and BIMLCM do not have good performance over the frequency selective channels. However, since the frequency domain equalization of SCBT will flatten the channel, the use of TCM, MLCM and BIMLCM can provide significant gain. Furthermore, since some of the bits are left uncoded, the speed requirements on the encoder and decoder can be relaxed. This feature is especially important for the very high data rate systems.

The system (), transmitter (), receiver (), and method of the present invention provide a technique to reduce the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) for the single carrier and single carrier block transmission (SCBT) modulations, especially when non-symmetric constellations (e.g. BPSK) are used. The constellation used for the modulation of each symbol, is rotated by a phase. Only the constellation is rotated, and the mapping of the bits into each constellation may or may not be similar. Further, in alternative embodiments the modulated bits are either encoded or not encoded. In a further alternative embodiment, a Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) is used. Because the phase rotation is known a priori, or can be determined from a priori known information, it can easily be corrected at the receiver.

Method and system to reduce PAPR in single carrier and SCBT communications systems

A Single Carrier Block Transmission (SCBT) system employs an inherently parallel approach to error correction processing. At the transmission system (), an incoming data stream is split () into P parallel data streams, each having a data rate equal to a fraction of the incoming data stream's data rate. The parallel data streams are then each separately encoded () in P parallel encoding processes (beneficially, using P parallel encoders ()). The P separately encoded data streams are then merged (), interleaved (), and mapped () into a single stream of encoded symbols, which are transmitted to the receiver using an arbitrary modulation () and transmission scheme. At the receiver (), the received data stream is de-interleaved () and split into P encoded data streams, which are then decoded () using P parallel decoders. Then, the decoded data streams are combined or multiplexed () into a single data stream.

Method and system of single carrier block transmission with parallel encoding and decoding

A method () of communicating a plurality of data bits over L diversity channels uses a constellation set comprising a plurality (L) of M-point quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations corresponding to the L diversity channels. The constellations do not exhibit overlapping data points, and provide full diversity. The method includes mapping () k*L data bits to L QAM transmission symbols in the L QAM constellation sets, and transmitting () the L QAM symbols where M=2*. Each of each of the k*L data bits is directly mapped into all of the L QAM symbols of the QAM constellation set, and for all combinations of k*L bits, changing a value of one of k*L data bits changes all of the L symbols.

Method and system of diversity transmission of data employing M-point QAM modulation

The system (), apparatus (), and method of the present invention provide an hierarchical pseudo-circularly symmetric and full circularly symmetric training sequence structure () for high-speed communication system. The hieratical pseudo-circularly symmetric part () is preferably used for burst detection, coarse frequency and timing error estimation and AGC gain setting. The full circularly symmetric part () is preferably used for channel estimation, fine frequency error estimation. The resulting sequence has a very good peak-to-average power (PAPR) property, making it suitable for many applications. The bandwidth efficiency is also improved due to using symmetric sequences.

An MB OFDM system that includes a coder, responsive to a stream of at least one incoming symbol, to form therefrom a set including channel symbols that correspond to each incoming symbol, such that the channel symbols include the incoming symbol, the negative of the incoming symbol, the complex conjugate of an incoming symbol, and a negative of a complex conjugate of an incoming symbol; an output stage configured to: when two of the channel symbols are complex conjugates of one another, the output stage transforms one of the two channel symbols as the output of a single IFFT and the other of the two channel symbols by a reversal of the index of the output and creates OFDM symbols from the transformed symbols using an IFFT such that the two transformed OFDM symbols are copies of each other with inversed indices.

The present invention provides a system (-), apparatus (-), and method for an energy-based antenna selection technique in which the antenna that observes the largest SNR averaged over all carriers per sub-band () is selected for space-time coded MB-OFDM systems. Due to the frequency-selective nature of the system, different sub-band may have different channel gaining effect from the multi-path channels. We can perform energy-based antenna selection per sub-band, and the simulation results show that the proposed technique works not only for MB-OFDM UWB channels with shadowing, but also for the same channel without shadowing.
