A system can facilitate pre-treatment a biofluid sample for various applications for monitoring and/or tracking a subject's health. The system includes a sample collection component that can collect the biofluid sample. The system also includes a mixing component that includes a media with a material. Upon adding the biofluid sample to the mixing component, the biofluid sample mixes with the media. The system also includes a filter component that can filter the media from the biofluid sample. After the media is filtered from the biofluid sample, the biofluid sample can be provided to an analyte analysis application.

Collection and treatment of a biofluid sample

A system can facilitate detection of the presence of an analyte or a contaminant in a contaminated sample. The system includes a first sensor to detect the analyte and a contaminant in the sample and a second sensor to detect the analyte or the contaminant in the sample. The detections are compared by a device comprising a processor to eliminate either the analyte or the contaminant from the final detected result.

A method and associated apparatus are described that enables unattended, remotely distributed appliances, such as vending machines, utility meters, thermostats and kitchen appliances (ovens, washing machines, refrigerators, etc.) to be connected inexpensively to each other and to a centrally located server. The apparatus 1) uses relatively simple 'personality' modules to adapt the apparatus to the application in combination with a sophisticated core module that provides the intelligence needed to process data locally, to format that data and to transfer it to a remote server and 2) uses existing Internet-based communication links, thereby avoiding the costly proprietary links used with current state-of-the-art solutions.

Method and apparatus for inexpensively monitoring and controlling remotely distributed appliances

The invention provides improved methods and apparatus for control using field and control devices that provide a virtual machine environment and that communicate via an IP network. By way of non-limiting example, such field device can be an 'intelligent' transmitter or actuator that includes a low power processor, along with a random access memory, a read-only memory, FlashRAM, and a sensor interface. The processor can execute a real-time operating system, as well as a Java virtual machine (JVM). Java byte code executes in the JVM to configure the field device to perform typical process control functions, e.g., for proportional integral derivative (PID) control and signal conditioning. Control networks can include a plurality of such field and control devices interconnected by an IP network, such as an Ethernet.

Methods and apparatus for control using control devices that provide a virtual machine environment and that communicate via an IP network

A powered Ethernet connection is provided between two devices connected by an Ethernet connection that provides data communication between the devices. Electrical power is applied to the Ethernet connection at the first device, and extracted from the Ethernet connection at the second device. The extracted power is used to power the second device.
