Provided is an error correcting encoder and, more particularly, to an error correcting encoder used for an improved transmission method of the Advanced Television System Committee (ATSC), and a method thereof. The error correcting encoder for digital television broadcasting, which is suggested in the present research, includes a robust encoder for encoding a one-bit input into robust encoded data; a pre-coding block for receiving the robust encoded data and performing pre-coding to thereby produce a pre-coded signal; and a trellis encoding block for performing trellis encoding on the robust encoded data and the pre-coded signal.

Provided is a system and method for terrestrial digital broadcasting service using a single frequency network without additional equipment. The system and method synchronizes input signals into transmitting stations by inserting a transmission synchronization signal into a header of TS periodically, and solves the problematic ambiguity of the trellis encoder by including a trellis encoder switching unit separately and initializing a memory of the trellis encoder. The DTV transmitter includes an input means for receiving a digital video data stream including normal data and robust data; an encoding means for coding the digital video data stream into data symbols; and a transmitting means for modulating and transmitting an output signal of the encoding means, wherein the encoding means performs trellis coding on the robust data by sequentially applying a plurality of trellis coding methods.

Provided is a frequency synchronizing apparatus and method that can synchronize frequencies between receiving signals and transmitting signals by extracting a carrier error and sampling timing error information in a synchronization process of the receiving signal from a main transmitter or another repeater and reflecting them in the transmitting signal in an on-channel repeater. The apparatus includes a carrier recovery means for compensating a carrier frequency error of a receiving signal; a timing recovery means for compensating a sampling timing error of the receiving signal; a carrier error reflecting means for reflecting the carrier frequency error extracted from the carrier recovery means to a transmitting signal; and a timing error reflecting means for reflecting the sampling timing error extracted from the timing recovery means to the transmitting signal. The present invention is used to form an on-channel repeating network in any transmission system including a digital television broadcasting system.

The DTV receiver includes: a receiving unit for receiving a transmission signal including general data and robust data and converting the transmission signal into a base-band signal; an equalizer for determining a symbol level of the transmission signal; a trellis decoder for performing trellis decoding on a symbol of the determined level; a nonsystematic Reed Solomon (NRS) decoder for performing NRS decoding on the trellis-decoded robust data and correcting an error; and a restoring unit for restoring a digital video data stream with respect to the trellis-decoded general data and the NRS-decoded robust data.

Apparatus and method for receiving digital television signal with backward compatibility byte

In a channel equalizer applicable to a digital television receiver, a forward filter and a backward filter perform filtering to an input signal and a predetermined signal. A Viterbi decoder corrects errors during a transmission procedure in a blind mode. A training symbol storing block stores training symbols. An output signal of the Viterbi decoder and symbols are provided to the backward filter in accordance with a blind mode or a training mode. A Kalman gain is calculated in a Kalman gain calculating block and an error signal is calculated by comparing an equalized signal, symbols, and the output signal of the Viterbi decoder with one another. A tap coefficient is updated by using the calculated error signal and the Kalman gain.

Disclosed is a pre-equalizer, a vestigial sideband (VSB) transmission system using the pre-equalizer, and a VSB transmission method. A first transmit signal is stored in a first memory, and a pre-equalizer pre-equalizes the first transmit signal based on a set tap coefficient. A transmitter modulates the pre-equalized first transmit signal, and sends the modulated signal. The first transmit signal is fed back to a receiver, which demodulates the transmitted first transmit signal and stores the demodulated signal as the second transmit signal in a second memory. Subsequently, the pre-equalizer calculates a tap coefficient based on an error value as the difference between the first transmit signal and the second transmit signal, and updates the set tap coefficient based on the calculated tap coefficient.
