The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device in which the light sources of a backlight unit are independently driven as a plurality of separate regions, and to a drive method for the same. In situations where there is a substantial variation in the brightness (luminance) of regions being displayed on the liquid crystal display device, the present invention can improve the visibility of boundaries due to differences in luminance in images displayed within the regions of the backlight unit emitting light at different levels of luminance as a result.

An LED backlight unit and an LCD using a backlight unit may be provided. A liquid crystal display (LCD) may include a plurality of modules including a circuit board, a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) light sources arranged on the circuit board for emitting light, and a light guide plate having a light incidence part including an incident surface for receiving light emitted from the LED light source and a light emission part for emitting the light. The LCD may further include a frame having the plurality of the modules provided thereon, and at least one driving unit on one surface of the frame, wherein a connection hole is formed in the frame to connect the circuit board to the at least one driving unit.

According to one embodiment, an LED back-light unit includes a light guide portion that includes a light guide plate and a reflection plate coupled to the light guide plate, wherein the light guide plate has a light input part and a first connection part, and wherein the reflection plate has a second connection part connected to the first connection part, and a light source including at least one light emitting diode, the light source emitting light toward the light guide portion.
