A three-dimensional (3D) image display apparatus includes a display panel configured to display a 3D image; a light guide panel disposed on a rear surface of the display panel to emit light to the display panel; a first light source configured to irradiate light toward the light guide panel; a second light source configured to irradiate light toward the light guide panel; and a controller configured to control the first light source and the second light source to emit light alternately, wherein the light guide panel includes a first pattern which responds to the first light source and does not respond to the second light source, and a second pattern which responds to the second light source and does not respond to the first light source.

3D image display apparatus and image display method thereof

A display device and a method of controlling the same are provided. The display device includes: a display panel including a plurality of pixels, each of which includes a plurality of sub pixels; a prism panel at one side of the display panel and including a prism array and a liquid crystal; a prism panel driver configured to apply voltage to the prism panel; and a controller configured to display a plurality of image frames on the display panel and to control a driving state of the prism panel variably while the plurality of image frames is displayed.

Display device and method of controlling the same

A backlight unit is provided. The backlight unit includes: a first surface light source array; a second surface light source array disposed on an upper portion of the first surface light source array and arranged such that a light emitting surface of the second surface light source array is parallel with a light emitting surface of the first surface light source array; and a reflection plate disposed on a lower portion of the first surface light source array and arranged such that a reflective surface of the reflection plate is parallel with the light emitting surface of the first surface light source array, wherein the second surface light source array is stacked on the first surface light source array such that the first and second surface light source arrays are offset from each other in a plane parallel to the light emitting surfaces.

A new 2D/3D switchable display apparatus matches a polarization direction of light output from a 2D image display panel with a rubbing direction of a lower alignment layer of a liquid crystal lens, and tilts a rubbing direction of an upper alignment layer of the liquid crystal lens and a direction of a polarization axis of a polarizer at a predetermined angle, thereby reducing a loss of light passing through the liquid crystal lens, making it possible to improve luminance of images, improve the quality of 3D images in the horizontal direction, prevent or reduce color separation and moire phenomena, and reduce the manufacturing cost.

Two-dimensional/three-dimensional switchable display apparatus

A two-dimensional/three-dimensional switchable display apparatus includes: a display panel; a first substrate disposed on the display panel; a first electrode layer disposed on the first substrate and including a plurality of first electrodes; a second substrate disposed on the first substrate; a second electrode layer disposed on the second substrate and including a plurality of second electrodes; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates. A plurality of lens units are formed in association with a first position of the liquid crystal layer when a lens forming voltage profile is applied to the first electrodes and a common voltage is applied to the second electrodes. When the common voltage is applied to the first electrodes and the lens forming voltage is applied to the second electrodes, the plurality of lens units are formed in association with a second position spaced apart from the first position.

A liquid crystal lens panel includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer. The first substrate includes a first base substrate, a lens common electrode disposed on the first base substrate, and a first alignment layer disposed on the lens common electrode, the first alignment layer including a first alignment direction. The second substrate includes a second base substrate opposite to the first base substrate, a plurality of lens electrodes that extend in a lens axis and is parallel with each other, and a second alignment layer disposed on the plurality of lens electrodes, the second alignment layer including a second alignment direction substantially perpendicular to the first alignment direction. The liquid crystal layer is disposed between the first and second alignment layers.

A lens substrate includes a base substrate, a first lens electrode and a first signal line. The base substrate includes a lens area and a peripheral area surrounding the lens area. The first signal line in the peripheral area and includes a layered structure in which a first transparent conductive layer and a metal layer directly contact each other. The first lens electrode is in the lens area and includes the first transparent conductive layer excluding the metal layer. The first signal line is in the peripheral area. The first signal line is connected to the first lens electrode and includes a layered structure in which the first transparent conductive layer and the metal layer directly contact each other.

Lens substrate, method of manufacturing the lens substrate and lens panel having the lens substrate

A display apparatus includes a display panel and a liquid crystal lens. The display panel includes a first pixel displaying an N-th portion of a left image corresponding to an N-th position in the left image and a second pixel displaying an N-th portion of a right image corresponding to the N-th position in the right image. The second pixel is spaced apart from the first pixel with additional pixels disposed between the second and first pixels. The liquid crystal lens includes a unit lens directing the N-th left image to a left eye of an observer and the N-th right image to a right eye of the observer where N is a positive integer.
