Disclosed herein is a vertical alignment liquid crystal display device with high-speed response. This vertical alignment liquid crystal display device comprises: upper and lower substrates which are disposed opposite one another at the desired interval; a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the upper and lower substrates and formed of liquid crystals with negative dielectric anisotropy; an insulating film formed on the inner surface of the lower substrate and having a hole formed therein; a jagged pixel electrode which is formed on the insulating film in such a manner that the pixel electrode covers more than half of the hole; a counter electrode which is formed on the inner surface of the upper electrode; vertical alignment films which are interposed between the pixel electrode and the liquid crystal layer and between the counter electrode and the liquid crystal layer, respectively; and polarizers which are attached on the outer surfaces of the upper and lower substrates, respectively, in such a manner that their polarizing axes cross each other.

Vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device having pixel electrode partially covering holes of the insulating film

Disclosed is an LCD having liquid crystal molecules that lie at a predetermined direction around a valley formed in an upper substrate of the LCD in order to prevent creation of an unadjustable disclination line. The LCD comprises an upper substrate, a lower substrate and a plurality of slits formed in a pixel region of the lower substrate. Each of the slits has a minute distance to the adjacent one of the slits. A valley is formed in a color filter of the upper substrate covered with a transparent electrode, and has a predetermined angle with respect to the slits. Vertical alignment material is formed in opposite faces of the upper and lower substrates. A liquid crystal layer is injected between the upper and lower substrates. Polarizers are arranged in outer faces of the upper and lower substrates, and have transmission axes, which are perpendicular to each other.

Disclosed herein is a vertical alignment liquid crystal display device with high-speed response. Vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device having pixel electrode on protrusion on resin layer

A VVA mode LCD has a liquid crystal (LC) layer of a negative dielectric anisotropy between lower and upper substrates. A pixel electrode is formed on the lower substrate. A color resin layer is formed on the upper substrate and has a V-shaped valley and jagged valleys, which are perpendicular to and shallower in depth than the V-shaped valley. A counter electrode is formed on the color resin layer and has a V-shaped valley and jagged valleys perpendicular to the V-shaped valleys. A first vertical orientation layer is formed between the pixel electrode and the LC layer. A second vertical orientation layer is formed between the counter electrode and the LC layer. First and second polarizers are attached to the outer and inner faces of the upper and lower substrates, respectively. The polarization axis of each intersects. The jagged valleys are provided to the V-shaped valleys via halftone exposure.

VVA mode LCD

Liquid crystal display devices having stairs type driving signal capable of preventing over-twist and improving response time properties by applying data signal of stairs type pulse signal when a gate signal is applied to drive the TFT, including upper and lower substrates with an interposed liquid crystal layer driving electrodes to drive the liquid crystals; first and second alignment layers rubbed in a first direction and in a direction parallel with the first alignment layer, respectively; first polarizing plate arranged outside of the lower substrate, forming 45&deg; angle with the first direction; and second polarizing plate outside of the upper substrate having a transmittance axis perpendicular to the first polarizing plate and forming 45&deg; angle with the first direction. A gate signal is applied to drive a thin film transistor in each pixel, and data signals having two or more stairs type pulse signals are successively applied.

A reflective type FFS-LCD includes: a liquid crystal layer; a first substrate formed with counter and pixel electrodes on one side of the liquid crystal layer to generate a fringer field to drive the liquid crystal molecules; a second substrate on the other side of the liquid crystal layer; a first homogeneous alignment layer near the first substrate having a rubbing axis in a selected direction; a second homogeneous alignment layer near the second substrate and having a rubbing axis in a selected direction; a polarizer having a selected polarizing axis; and a reflective plate. Retardation occurs in the liquid crystal layer by (2n&plus;1)&lgr;/4 when the liquid crystal molecules in the liquid crystal layer are driven by the fringe field.

Disclosed is a fringe field switching mode LCD comprising an upper and a lower substrates opposed to each other with a predetermined distance; a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates, comprising liquid crystal molecules of positive dielectric anisotropy; a transparent counter electrode formed on the inner surface of lower substrate; a transparent pixel electrode formed on the inner surface of the lower substrate, forming a fringe field with the counter electrode to drive most of liquid crystals; and a horizontal alignment layer interposed between the substrates and liquid crystal layer, having a predetermined rubbing axis, wherein a retardation of the liquid crystal layer is 0.3 to 0.45 &mgr;m.

Fringe field switching mode LCD

The present invention discloses a fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display. The disclosed comprises: a lower and an upper substrates disposed opposite to each other at a predetermined distance, having transparency; a counter electrode and a pixel electrode disposed on the inner surface of the lower substrate with a gate insulating layer interposed and made of transparent conductors, forming a fringe field when a electric field is applied; a black matrix and color filter formed on the inner surface of the upper substrate; an ITO layer disposed on the inner surface of the upper substrate which has the black matrix and the color filter therein; and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the lower and the upper substrates, including a plurality of liquid crystal molecules of negative dielectric anisotropy. In the FFS mode LCD of the present invention, the counter electrode has a plate shape and the pixel electrode has a slit shape. And the counter electrode has one or more grooves whose width is smaller than that of the slit of the pixel electrode, preferably 2 or 3 &mgr;m and the ITO layer includes a window region therein.

Fringe field mode LCD shielded from electrostatic disturbances

A reflective type fringe field switching mode liquid crystal display device having improved contrast is provided. The device has a lower and an upper substrates arranged with a distance and having a unit pixel defined therein. Between the substrates, a liquid crystal layer having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules are interposed. A counter electrode is formed on an inner surface of the lower substrate in the unit pixel. A pixel electrode is formed above the counter electrode. The pixel electrode and the counter electrode generate a fringe field for driving the liquid crystal molecules in the unit pixel. A horizontal alignment layer having a rubbing axis is interposed between the lower substrate and the liquid crystal layer, and a vertical alignment layer is interposed between the upper substrate and the liquid crystal layer. In addition, a polarizer is disposed on an outer surface of the upper substrate and having a polarizing axis.

Liquid crystal display device of reflective type fringe field switching mode

Disclosed is a optically compensated splay mode liquid crystal display. The device includes: lower and upper substrates opposed with intervening a selected distance and having driving electrodes in their inner surfaces respectively and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the lower and the upper substrates and having a plurality of liquid crystal molecules, wherein no voltage is applied to the driving electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules are arranged in a bend state, and wherein a voltage above a critical voltage is applied to the driving electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules are arranged in a splay state which makes a symmetry of up and down with respect to a middle layer of the liquid crystal layer.
