A shoe press apparatus of a paper machine for pressing wet paper through a nip includes a counter roll, and a shoe module disposed adjacent to the counter roll. The shoe module includes a cylindrical blanket, and a press mechanism disposed inside the cylindrical blanket, extending in a width direction of the cylindrical blanket and individually pressing a plurality of pressed portions formed on the cylindrical blanket along a traveling direction of the wet paper, toward an outer-surface of the counter roll so that the wet paper is pressed in the nip between the cylindrical blanket and the counter roll so that a pressure can be applied efficiently in response to a density required for paper solely by the shoe press apparatus.

A monitoring apparatus is provided which can ensure the prevention of a paper break even in a poor installation environment. A light source () illuminates light () on a lateral edge () of wet paper () and a camera () captures light () reflected therefrom. The camera () is a micro camera and completely covered by a camera box (). The camera box () has an observation window () which is made of a transparent member, at the lens side () of the camera (). The outer surface of the observation window () is coated and an air curtain () that flows from above to below prevents staining caused by mist. The air curtain () is formed in such a manner that air that is continuously supplied inside a cover () flows along the outer surface of the observation window () from an opening portion (). A color image obtained by the camera () is subjected to image processing in an image processing device () and the resulting image is projected on a monitor TV (), so that variations of the release point () can be monitored. This allows for forecasting of a machine abnormality leading to a paper break.

A calender for a sheet of paper comprising a metal roll which is rotated by a first driving unit. The calender further comprises a rotatable cylindrical jacket, a pressurizing shoe, and a plurality of support members. The cylindrical jacket is disposed opposite the metal roll to form a calender nip so that the sheet of paper is continuously passed through the calender nip. The pressurizing shoe is provided within the jacket at the position of the calender nip and presses the interior surface of the jacket radially outward to pressurize the calender nip. The support members are disposed inside the jacket so that they are equally balanced in the peripheral direction of the jacket.

There is provided a monitoring apparatus for preventing paper breakage. For this monitoring apparatus, a light source is disposed on the upper side of a wet paper and a light emitting face thereof faces downward. An operation-side camera a and a drive-side camera b are disposed on the side opposite to the light source with respect to the wet paper and a lens face thereof faces upward. Light a of the light source passes through the wet paper after being reflected from a mirror and is caught by the cameras a and b. Thus, the cameras a and b photograph a silhouette (image) of the light a of the light source which has passed through the wet paper This image is sent to an image processing unit where the image is processed. Thereby, a machine trouble resulting in paper breakage can be predicted.

A continuous drying apparatus for a porous web including a porous web for traveling on a drying line, a heating cylinder for contacting the porous web at its circumferential surface and rotating in synchronization with the travel of the porous web to heat the porous web, a drying band for contacting and supporting a surface of the porous web which is out of contact with the heating cylinder and also for rotating in synchronization with the travel of the porous web, and a pressure rotating body disposed near the circumference of the heating cylinder and outside the drying band. The pressure rotating body is constructed of a rotating member for rotating and contacting an exterior surface of the drying band and a pressure device for pressurizing the rotating member toward the heating cylinder. With this, a porous web can be efficiently dried.
