Architecture that facilitates performance enhancement in message-based computing across a performance-based interface. When a request from a source is transmitted across the interface to a destination, a filter component in communication with the destination dynamically allows only one or more relevant responses from the destination to transition the interface to the source. This mechanism achieves an even tighter filtering of events while at the same time giving developers more flexibility over the events they choose to register, thereby enhancing the performance of message-based computing architectures by reducing unnecessary computation.

This disclosure relates to drawing within a computer environment using a drawing resource. The computer environment includes a managed code portion and a native code portion. The computer environment compares a draw parameter call value being passed from the managed code portion to the native code portion with a stored drawing resource value stored in the native code portion. If the draw parameter call value is the same as the stored drawing resource value, then the computer environment is configured to draw onto a native drawing surface using the stored drawing resource. If the draw parameter call value is not the same as the drawing resource value, then a new drawing resource is created in the managed code portion. In another aspect, a portion of the drawing resource feature portion that contains data that describes at least one or more parameter of the drawing resource is transmitted between the managed code portion and the native code portion.

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to an enhanced knob with multiple integrated functions for use with an electric stringed musical instrument. The enhanced knob can be positioned on an electric stringed musical instrument or on an interconnected amplifier and can be either an add-on feature or can replace one or more existing knobs. In one embodiment of the present invention, the volume knob for an electric guitar is removed and replaced by an enhanced knob. The enhanced knob includes a switch that allows a user to switch between the multiple functions and also allows the user to control each selected function. The enhanced knob includes a volume function to compensate for the removed volume knob. Additionally, the enhanced knob includes a number of other functions, including a tuner function, a metronome function, and a dynamic visual-display function.

Performing draw operations in a native code portion using cached drawing resources

Techniques for management of drawing resources are described. In an implementation, a reference count numeral may be associated with a drawing resource stored in cache memory. One may be added to the reference count numeral each time a new drawing resource is added to memory. In addition, one may be removed from the reference count each time an existing drawing resource is removed from the memory. Also, the drawing resource may be maintained in the cache memory when the reference count numeral is greater than zero.

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to an electronic-device interface integrated into an electric stringed musical instrument. The electronic-device interface can be used for interconnecting an electric stringed musical instrument to an electronic device. In one embodiment of the present invention, an electronic-device interface includes a universal-serial-bus interface, a tip-ring-ring-sleeve output jack, and an enhanced electric-stringed-musical-instrument cable with a tip-ring-ring-sleeve connection at a first end and a universal-serial-bus connection at a second end. When an electric stringed musical instrument is equipped with an electronic-device interface, a user may insert the first end of the enhanced electric-stringed-musical-instrument cable into the tip-ring-ring-sleeve output jack and the second end of the enhanced electric-stringed-musical-instrument cable into a universal-serial-bus port for an electronic device. The user may then input music to the electronic device by playing music on the electric stringed musical instrument.

Methods and systems for interfacing an electric stringed musical instrument to an electronic device

A peer-to-peer communication system that transmits application data from an application component on one network peer to an application component on another network peer. A programming interface is provided to the communication system to facilitate programming of applications that rely on peer-to-peer communications. The communication system uses messaging providers to which each peer may be connected for purposes other than communications between peer-to-peer application components, thereby reducing the resources a peer-to-peer application requires for communication and making the system advantageous for use in portable electronic devices. Additionally, the communication system uses addresses already assigned in each messaging provider, allowing peer-to-peer communication between peers that may otherwise have been non-addressable.

Notifications are generated in managed and native environments and propagated to an interfacing abstraction layer of native code there between. The abstraction layer assesses each received notification to determine whether the notification, or a previously received collection thereof, should be transitioned across a boundary between the managed environment and the native environment. The managed environment includes a virtual machine in a managed code portion. The native environment includes an operating system that interfaces the abstraction layer which is at a boundary between the managed code portion and the operating system. A collection of notifications are those that have been batched and/or synthesized. The abstraction layer is configured with predetermined criteria to assess whether to form a collection of received notifications and/or to prevent a transition of a notification, or collection thereof, across the boundary.

The systems and methods described herein are directed at controlling access to a data structure. A data field is included within the data structure. The data field includes information about the accessibility of the data structure. In response to an attempt to access the data structure by a first thread, the data field is configured to identify that the data structure is not accessible by another thread. The first thread can then access the data structure. In response to an attempt to access the data structure by a second thread, the second thread is configured to determine from the data field that the data structure is being accessed by the first thread.

Systems and methods for metering execution of code at runtime are described. According to one implementation, a call is received requesting execution of a protected service. In response, permission is requested for the execution. The request for permission is analyzed. A grant of permission is based on the analysis.

Relatively-temporary applications may be installed. As a result of the installation and/or execution of such an application, an associated application isolated storage unit may be established. When established, the application isolated storage unit is designated for private storage use by the associated application. Additionally, a linkage between the application isolated storage unit and the associated application is created. Upon initiation of a reclamation procedure, the linkage from the application isolated storage unit is traced to the indicated location of the associated application. If the associated application no longer exists, the application isolated storage unit is deleted so as to reclaim the memory space.
