The present invention is a roadside safety system and method to communicate to a roadside personnel a potential danger created by an oncoming vehicle. The system includes a projection system that selectively projects a pattern of light in a direction along the roadside, a sensor system that includes a camera to detect the oncoming vehicle, an alert system connected directly or indirectly to the sensor system that selectively causes an alert to notify the roadside personnel when there is the potential danger; and a control system that selectively enables the projection system to project the pattern of light and causes the alert system to issue the alert. The projection system establishes a virtual flare on the road to warn oncoming vehicles of a emergency situation and a processor can process information received by the sensors and can then determine potential threats created by oncoming vehicles.

Protecting roadside personnel using a camera and a projection system

A method and apparatus are provided to permit location discovery, including location discovery in indoor settings. The method may identify a wireless fingerprint present at a geographical location and determine whether the wireless fingerprint corresponds to a previously observed wireless fingerprint associated with the predefined geographical location. A new wireless fingerprint and a geographical location, or bind, may be received by the system and the system may evaluate whether or not the new bind is erroneous or not, or if the new bind is an improvement over existing binds in determining whether or not to accept the new bind.

Method and apparatus for constructing a user-generated geographical system

An apparatus for determining a speed of cyclic motion of a device or user and one or more poses of a device may include a processor and memory storing executable computer code causing the apparatus to at least perform operations including receiving one or more determined acceleration values during one or more time periods in response to detected cyclic motion of a user moving with an apparatus. The computer program code may further cause the apparatus to transform the acceleration values to one or more corresponding frequency components associated with the acceleration values. The computer program code may further cause the apparatus to determine a speed of the cyclic motion of the user based in part on comparing a spectrum of the frequency components to one or more spectrums of distribution associated with respective one or more speeds of training data. Corresponding methods and computer program products are also provided.

Methods, apparatuses and computer program products for determining speed of movement of a device and device pose classification

A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided to permit location discovery, including location discovery in indoor settings. The method may identify a wireless signature present at a geographical location and determine whether the wireless signature corresponds to a previously observed wireless signature associated with the predefined geographical location. In instances in which the wireless signature fails to correspond to a previously observed wireless signature, the method may also receive an identification of a geographical location and associate, such as by means of a processor, the wireless signature with the identification of the geographical location. A corresponding computer program product and apparatus are also provided.

Method, apparatus and computer program product for facilitating location discovery

The position and orientation of a mobile unit is determined from ultrasonic waves received from beacons of known location. Orientation is determined from a phase difference of the sensed ultrasonic wave at plural receivers on the mobile unit. Signals from multiple beacons may be processed to solve for x, y and z position and for speed of sound. The receivers are spaced at greater than a half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave and signals from plural receivers are processed to remove multiple wavelength phase ambiguity. Two non-collinear sets of collinear receivers allow ambiguity resulting from symmetry of the receivers to be broken.

Method and apparatus for determining orientation

To avoid needless processing of non-visible portions of a 3D scene, an occlusion culling method which dynamically identifies large occluders as the viewpoint moves is applied to discard non-visible polygons early in the graphics pipeline, i.e., in object space. The method is conservative, i.e., it overestimates the set of visible polygons; it exploits spatial coherence by using a hierarchical data structure; and it exploits temporal coherence by reusing visibility information such as supporting and separating computed for previous viewpoints. Objects are called from a three-dimensional object database if they are fully occluded from sight of the viewpoint due to either occluders near the viewpoint or occluders near the objects themselves. Objects which have not been called are drawn. Supporting planes tangential to an occluder and object set are used to determine occlusion.
