To provide further redundancy and prevent unneeded switchovers, status or heartbeat messages are transmitted between the active main equipment and standby redundant equipment over two different networks.

Method and system for providing availability and reliability for a telecommunication network entity

Provided is a method and system for enabling mobile devices, radio access networks (RANs), and core networks (CNs) based on different specifications and underlying technologies to communicate. The mobile device and the RAN may be based on one technology, such as a code division multiple access (CDMA) specification, while the CN may be based on another technology, such as a global system for mobile communications (GSM) specification. The method takes a CDMA message received by the RAN, converts it into a corresponding GSM message, and passes it to the CN. Alternatively, a new GSM message may be created. Similarly, a GSM message from the CN may be converted into a CDMA message (or a new CDMA message may be created) and the CDMA message passed on to the RAN. The method may also initiate a function or procedure in one portion of a network using one technology when a certain message is received from another portion of the network using a different technology. This provides a cost-effective and flexible process that, among other advantages, enables the mobile device to communicate with incompatible CNs.

Method and system for providing wireless services using an access network and a core network based on different technologies

The present invention provides a system and method for migrating a control of a wireless communication service provided to a mobile station (MS) in a first network depending on a first technology to a second network depending on a second technology. When receiving a request for the wireless communication service in the first network by a mobile switch center (MSC), at least one instruction is obtained to grant or deny the wireless communication service from a first control device in the second network, the first control device providing the instruction based on its communication to a management subsystem for the control of the wireless communication service. If the wireless communication service is granted, a second control device in the first network controlled by the first control device allows the MS to execute the wireless communication service with a receiver. If the wireless communication service is denied, the second control device in the first network controlled by the first control device prohibits the MS to execute the wireless communication service with the receiver, wherein the first and second control device communicate with each other using a predetermined protocol independent of the network technology used by either the first and the second network, and wherein the first network thus maintains the control of the wireless communication service through the management subsystem connected to the second network without implementing additional management subsystem.

A method and system is provided for providing packet data service and circuit switch service during the same session to a mobile station (MS) whose capabilities do not allow such services to be provided thereon by the wireless network according to the its specifications. First, a voice service is provided between the MS and a first client through a switch device, the voice service conforming to a predetermined communication protocol. The MS is then notified about an incoming data service request from a second client to transfer a predetermined amount of data. The voice service is disconnected between the switch device and the MS if the user decides to activate the incoming data service. The voice service between the switch device and the first client is still maintained. The data service from the second client to the MS through the switch device is then established. The data service between the switch device and the MS is disconnected while the data service between the switch and the second client is maintained after the predetermined amount of data has been transferred from the second client to the MS. The voice service between the switch and the MS is re-established if needed. Also, the same client can initiate the voice and packet data service request to the same MS.

A self engineering system includes a data acquisition module, a self engineering engine, and a control module. The data acquisition module couples to the communication system and receives current operating data of the communication system. The self engineering engine receives the current operating data and determines new operating parameters of the communication system based upon the current operating data and current operating parameters. The control module implements the new operating parameters within the communication system. The self engineering system may include an expert system that receives the current operating data and, based upon the current operating data and the current operating parameters of the communication system, produces the new operating parameters. The expert system includes a fact library, a knowledge base and an inference engine. The fact library includes configuration data, historical operating data, the current operating parameters and proposed operating parameters. The knowledge base consists of rules intended to alter the fact library based upon contents of the fact library and the current operating data. Finally, the inference engine executes the rules and alters the fact library. The knowledge base and the inference engine then work together to produce the new operating parameters based upon contents of the fact library. The expert system may also include a system simulator that simulates operation of the communication system to verify proposed operating parameters prior to their implementation. The self engineering system also determines configuration errors, possible hardware faults and even improper hardware installation of the communication system. Thus, the self engineering system is useful in cross-checking installation as well as the functionality of the communication system as installed.

Provided are a method and system for utilization with wireless communications systems having a cellular architecture covering a geographic area. The method and system accomplish their objects via the following. The geographic area is defined. One or more pairs of the sectors within the defined geographic area wherein a weak connection zone exists are determined. The geographic area is decomposed into two or more sub-areas wherein each sub-area is isolated from other sub-areas by the determined one or more pairs of sectors having a weak connection zone. A first of the sub-areas is selected. Frequency groups are assigned to each sector within the first selected sub-area such that signal to noise ratio is optimized. Thereafter, a second of the sub-areas is selected. One or more sectors within the second selected one of the sub-areas which are linked to sectors within the first selected sub-area are selected. Frequency groups are assigned to the selected sectors within the selected second of the sub-areas such that signal to noise ratio in the selected sector within the selected second of the sub-areas is optimized. Thereafter, frequency groups are assigned to every other sector within the selected second of the sub-areas such that signal to noise ratio is optimized across the second selected sub-area and such that signal to noise ratio over the defined geographic area is optimized.

The switch capacity prediction process of the present invention collects operational measurements from the cellular switch. These operational measurements indicate the frequency of the call events processed by the switch. The other input/output (I/O) time used by the call processor to process messages not related to call processing is separated from the call processing I/O time. A relationship between the other I/O time and the sum of the call processing time and call processing I/O time is determined. A weighted average is determined from the summation of the products of: the frequency of events and the call processing time, the frequency of events and the call processing I/O time, and the other I/O time. The weighted average is then divided into the call processor occupancy time, in hours, to determine the switch capacity.

In a cellular mobile access communications system each mobile terminal registers its location at intervals. From the registration history of each mobile, a probable group of cells within which a mobile terminal may be located is predicted. When a mobile is to be paged, the paging message is transmitted to the predicted cell group. If no response is received from the terminal, the page message is then broadcast to further system cells. This reduces the overall paging load on the system.
