A pressure sensitive adhesive composition is described that comprises a (meth)acrylic polymer comprising polymerized units of (meth)acrylic ester monomer having a Tg less than 0&#xb0; C. and ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising a pendent functional group crosslinked with an amine or carboxylic acid group of at least one amino acid. Also described are aqueous pressure sensitive adhesive compositions, adhesive-coated articles, and methods.

Pressure sensitive adhesive comprising (meth)acrylic polymer and amino acid crosslinker

A continuous method of manufacturing adhesives is provided. The method includes obtaining an actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition disposed on a major surface of an actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a first portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a first irradiation dosage. The method further includes moving the actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a second portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a second irradiation dosage. Optionally, the method also includes irradiating a third portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate prior to moving the substrate. The first irradiation dosage and the third irradiation dosage are often not the same, thereby forming an integral adhesive having a variable thickness in an axis normal to the actinic radiation-transparent substrate.

Continuous additive manufacturing methods

A method of making an adhesive is provided, including obtaining an actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition disposed against a surface of an actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a first portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a first irradiation dosage. The method further includes irradiating a second portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a second irradiation dosage. The first portion and the second portion are adjacent to or overlapping with each other and the first irradiation dosage and the second irradiation dosage are not the same. The method forms an integral adhesive having a variable thickness in an axis normal to the surface of the actinic radiation-transparent substrate. Also, an adhesive article is provided, including a substrate having a major surface and an integral adhesive disposed on the major surface of the substrate. Further, methods are provided, including receiving, by a manufacturing device having one or more processors, a digital object comprising data specifying an article; and generating, with the manufacturing device by an additive manufacturing process, the article based on the digital object. A system is provided, including a display that displays a 3D model of an article; and one or more processors that, in response to the 3D model selected by a user, cause a 3D printer to create a physical object of an article.

Additive manufacturing methods for adhesives and adhesive articles

A method of making an adhesive is provided, including obtaining an actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition disposed against a surface of an actinic radiation-transparent substrate and irradiating a first portion of the actinic radiation-polymerizable adhesive precursor composition through the actinic radiation-transparent substrate for a first irradiation dosage. Novel stress-reducing crosslinking oligomers that have application in dental restoratives, thin films, hardcoats, composites, adhesives, and other uses subject to stress reduction are described. The addition-fragmentation process of crosslinking results in a chain-transfer event that provides novel polymers that may be further functionalized. In addition, the addition-fragmentation oligomer comprises pendent functional groups that bond to a substrate by forming an ionic or covalent bond, or etch the substrate by chemically removing some material from the substrate.

Addition-fragmentation oligomers

Crosslinkable polymeric materials, crosslinked polymeric materials, articles containing the crosslinkable polymeric materials or crosslinked polymeric materials, and methods of making the articles and various compositions are provided. More particularly, the crosslinkable composition contains a) a first polymeric material, which has terminal dithiocarbamate or dithiocarbonate groups, b) a crosslinking composition containing a chlorinated triazine crosslinking agent and/or a crosslinking monomer having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups, and c) a thixotropic agent containing metal oxide particles. The crosslinkable composition may be printable or dispensed. In some embodiments, the crosslinked composition is a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Polymeric compositions prepared with a controlled radical initiator

Pressure sensitive adhesive comprising (meth) acrylic polymer and amino acid crosslinker

Crosslinkable compositions are provided that contain a) a polymeric material having at least two terminal dithiocarbamate groups or two terminal dithiocarbonate groups and b) a monomer composition that includes at least a crosslinking monomer having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups. The polymeric materials in the crosslinkable compositions undergo chain extension and crosslinking reactions when exposed to actinic radiation in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Additionally, crosslinked compositions, articles that contain the crosslinkable compositions or the crosslinked compositions, and methods of making the articles are provided.

Crosslinkable and crosslinked polymeric materials

Controlled radical initiators, reaction mixtures containing the controlled radical initiators and various ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and polymeric materials formed from the reaction mixtures are provided. The controlled radical initiators are bis-dithiocarbamate or bis-dithiocarbonate compounds with a single carbon atom between the two dithiocarbamate or dithiocarbonate groups. Polymeric materials such as homopolymers, random copolymers, and block copolymers can be prepared using the controlled radical initiators.

Polymeric material and methods of making using controlled radical initiators

Addition-fragmentation agents of the formula are disclosed: whereinR, Rand Rare each independently Z-Q-, a (hetero)alkyl group or a (hetero)aryl group with the proviso that at least one of R, Rand Ris Z-Q-,Q is a linking group have a valence of m+1;Z is an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group,m is 1 to 6;each Xis independently &#x2014;O&#x2014; or &#x2014;NR&#x2014;, where Ris H or C-Calkyl, andn is 0 or 1.

Addition-fragmentation agents

The disclosure describes a curable composition comprising a) a solute (meth) acryloyl oligomer having a plurality of pendent, ethylenically unsaturated, free-radically polymerizable functional groups and nucleophilic, hydrophilic groups, a Mof 5 k to 30 k. a T&#x3c;20&#xb0; C.; b) a solvent monomer component; and non-reactive oligomer an a photoinitiator. The curable composition may be used as an adhesive in optical applications.

Liquid optical adhesive compositions

The disclosure describes a curable composition comprising a) a solute (meth)acryloyl oligomer having a plurality of pendent, ethylenically unsaturated, free-radically polymerizable functional groups and nucleophilic, hydrophilic groups, a Mof 5 k to 30 k, a T&#x3c;20&#xb0; C.; b) a solvent monomer component; a chain transfer agent, and a photoinitiator. The curable composition may be used as an adhesive in optical applications.
