Techniques of data flow control are disclosed herein. One example technique includes upon receiving a notification indicating a change to a content item in a source shard, parsing the content item to extract data representing attributes of the content item and identifying a partition of the system-wide index based on the extracted data representing the attributes of the content item. The example technique can also include transmitting, to a token issuer, a request for a token that represents a permission to write to the identified partition of the system-wide index and upon receiving a token issued by the token issuer in response to the transmitted request, transmitting the extracted data representing the attributes of the content item along with the received token to write the extracted data in the partition of the system-wide index.

Data flow control in distributed computing systems

Datacenters or other large-scale distributed computing systems can provide computing resources such as processing power and data storage as computing services accessible to tenants via a computer network. A tenant, such as a corporation, school, or organization, can have multiple users or groups of users with corresponding websites. To facilitate ready access, data relevant to a user, group, or website of a tenant can be stored in a dedicated network location sometimes referred to as a shard. A shard can be a physical and/or logical storage location that contains emails, chats, instant messages, documents, photos, videos, or other types of content items with which the user, group, or website can interact.

A system for write optimization in transactional data management systems is described. The system stores a tree data structure that comprises a root, a plurality of internal nodes, and a plurality of leaf nodes. Each internal node comprises a pivot key and a child pointer. Each leaf node stores key-value pairs sorted by a corresponding key. The system forms a plurality of hybrid nodes. The hybrid nodes comprise a layer of internal nodes that are immediate parents of the plurality of leaf nodes. A buffer is formed only for each internal node of the plurality of hybrid nodes. The buffer is used to store a message that encodes an operation. The message is to be applied to the corresponding leaf nodes of the plurality of hybrid nodes.

Write optimization in transactional data management systems

A policy tip or end user notification is provided for data loss prevention in collaborative environments. A document interactivity application detects an action or trigger by an end user that affects a document. The document is processed, through a classification engine and a unified policy engine, with policies based on the action to detect a matched policy. A policy tip associated with the matched policy is identified and displayed on the display device in association with the document.

Providing policy tips for data loss prevention in collaborative environments

A server-to-server notification model that employs a connection pool such that an asynchronous request issued from the pool can access any session of the remote server for pending notifications on all of the sessions. Only one asynchronous request (or call) is issued to the remote server for all sessions in the connection pool, and the call is completed if any notifications to any participating sessions occur on the remote server. When the asynchronous request completes, the returned data provides a set of the sessions that have pending notifications.

An API called AdminRPC written in managed code allows background applications written in managed code to access backend data stores. Functions within this API provide administrator level access to a mailbox or a public folder on a backend server.
