An apparatus including a controllable fluid-contacting surface is provided. In another aspect, the present apparatus includes a flexible membrane and multiple actuators each having an output shaft or activation member coupled to a water-contacting membrane, with the shafts extending in a direction offset from the nominal outer surface of the membrane. A further aspect of the present apparatus includes an underwater vessel including a propulsion source, a flexible membrane having a water-contacting outer surface and an electronic controller including programmable software for actuating the actuators.

Systems, methods, and apparatuses for determining the distance between two positions are disclosed. The system includes a correlator, a first receiver, and a second receiver. The first and second receivers each include: an antenna, a steering mechanism, and a processor. The steering mechanism steers the antenna in an azimuthal direction and an elevation direction. The processor is configured to (i) control the steering mechanism, (ii) receive data recorded by the antenna from a plurality of sources, (iii) time-stamp the data recorded by the antenna, and (iv) control the transmission of the time-stamped data to the correlator. The correlator is configured to receive the time-stamped recorded data from the first receiver and the second receiver, and calculate a distance between the first receiver and the second receiver based thereon.

An interferometry system including a first telescope for simultaneously receiving a first optical/infrared signal and a first radio signal from a target; a second telescope configured to simultaneously receive a second optical/infrared signal and a second radio signal from the target; a first beam splitter communicatively connected to the first telescope, where the first beam splitter is configured to separate the first optical/infrared signal from the first radio signal; a second beam splitter communicatively connected to the second telescope, where the second beam splitter is configured to separate the second optical/infrared signal from the second radio; and a first optical/infrared interferometer configured to detect an interferometry image of the target using the first and second optical/infrared and radio signals.

An atmospheric aberration sensor that uses two optically correlated images of a scene and the Fourier transform capabilities of a lens or other focusing element. The sensor receives light via an f-number matching element from a scene or from an external optical system and transmits it through a focusing optical element to an updateable display element such as a spatial light modulator or micro mirror array, which modulates the real time image from the focusing element with previous template image of the same extended scene. The modulated image is focused onto an autocorrelation detection sensor, which detects a change in centroid position corresponding to a change of the tip/tilt in the optical path. This peak shift is detected by centroid detection and corresponds to the magnitude of global wavefront tip/tilt. With a lenslet array and detector array, the system can also measure local tip/tilt and higher order aberrations.

A system and method for simulating atmospheric turbulence for testing optical components. A time varying phase screen representing atmospheric turbulence is generated using Karhunen-Loeve polynomials and a splining technique for generating temporal functions of the noise factor for each Zernike mode. The phase screen is input to a liquid crystal spatial light modulator. A computer display allows the user to set geometric characteristics, the severity of the turbulence to be simulated, and to select between methods for generating atmospheric turbulence including Karhunen-Loeve polynomials, Zernike polynomials, and Frozen Seeing.

System and method of generating atmospheric turbulence for testing adaptive optical systems

A system for evaluation of optical quality of an optical device includes a light source configured to generate light, the generated light be received by an optical device. An interferometric lens apparatus is removably mounted to the optical device to generate interference fringes. A camera device is configured to receive and display the interference fringes, and a computer configured to analyze the interference fringes received from the camera device to determine aberrations of the optical device and generate a recommendation to correct the determined aberrations. Methods for evaluating the optical quality of an optical device are also described.
