In accordance with example implementations, a vehicle includes a body, an engine within the body, and at least one exhaust tube extending from the engine and having a particulate filter fluidly coupled to the exhaust tube to receive exhaust material from the exhaust tube. The vehicle also has at least one air injection pipe having a first end with an inlet arranged to receive air flow entering the body while the vehicle is moving, wherein the air injection pipe comprises a second end fluidly coupled to the exhaust tube and having an outlet positioned to provide air flow from the injection pipe into the exhaust tube upstream from the particulate filter. Passive soot regeneration with THC and CO reductions is realized by this introduced air flow.

A system includes a coolant pump and a first rotary valve. The coolant pump is configured to be mechanically driven by an engine and to send coolant to an inlet of the engine. The first rotary valve is adjustable to a zero flow position to prevent coolant flow to the first radiator and the heater core and thereby increase a rate at which the engine warms coolant flowing therethrough.

The present disclosure provides an engine cooling system for controlling the temperature of an engine of a motor vehicle. The system includes an engine cooling circuit for circulating a coolant to transfer heat from the engine to an airflow. An electric water pump is configured to circulate the coolant through the circuit at a maximum electric pump flow rate, and a mechanical water pump is configured to circulate the coolant through the circuit at a maximum mechanical pump flow rate that is higher than the maximum electric pump flow rate. The circuit further includes a selector valve configured to fluidly connect one of the electric water pump and the mechanical water pump to the engine. An engine control module generates a valve signal for actuating the selector valve to fluidly connect one of the electric water pump and the mechanical water pump to the engine.

A control system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes an estimated coolant flow module and at least one of a valve control module and a pump control module. The estimated coolant flow module estimates a rate of coolant flow through a cooling system for an engine based on a pressure of coolant in the cooling system and a speed of a coolant pump that circulates coolant through the cooling system. The valve control module controls the position of a coolant valve based on the estimated coolant flow rate. The pump control module controls the coolant pump speed based on the estimated coolant flow rate.

A strategy for controlling an electric pump and control valve in an internal combustion engine cooling system compensates for backpressure variations and maintains system operation within design parameters. The method comprises the steps of measuring the coolant temperature, measuring the electrical current and voltage to the pump motor, determining the pump speed and coolant flow, determining the desired coolant flow, determining a negative correction to the flow control valve and pump if desired flow is less than present coolant flow and determining a positive correction to the flow control valve and pump if desired flow is more than present coolant flow and undertaking this correction to coolant flow. Thus, based upon inferred back pressure in the engine coolant system from the data relating to the pump energy input, proper coolant flow, heat rejection and engine operating temperature can be maintained in spite of variations in system flow restrictions and backpressure.

The startup module, during a startup period or in response to a startup of the engine, receives a temperature signal and generates a first condition signal. The load module determines a load on the engine and generates a second condition signal. The flow module, if the first condition signal indicates a temperature of the engine is less than a first predetermined temperature and if the second condition signal indicates the load is less than a predetermined threshold, operates a pump to circulate coolant during the startup period. The peak estimation module estimates a temperature of a hottest metal location on the engine. The flow module increases a speed of the pump if the temperature of the hottest metal location is greater than a second predetermined temperature or the load is greater than or equal to the predetermined threshold.

A charge air cooler (CAC) includes a first header including a first interior portion, a second header spaced from the first header. The second header includes a second interior portion. At least one conduit extends between the first header and the second header. The at least one conduit includes a first end fluidically connected to the first interior portion, a second end fluidically connected to the second interior portion, and an intermediate portion extending therebetween. A heating system is arranged in a heat exchange relationship with the at least one conduit. The heating system is selectively operable to increase a temperature of fluids passing through the at least one conduit into one of the first and second headers.

Air-to-air charge air cooler (A-CAC) for a vehicle

A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a transmission fluid temperature sensor and a coolant valve control module. The transmission fluid temperature sensor measures a temperature of transmission fluid that is circulated through a transmission. The coolant valve control module controls at least one coolant valve to adjust coolant flow from an engine to a transmission fluid heat exchanger and at least one of a radiator, an engine oil heat exchanger, and a heater core. When the transmission fluid temperature is less than a first temperature, the coolant valve control module controls the at least one coolant valve to allow coolant flow from the engine to the transmission fluid heat exchanger and prevent coolant flow from the engine to the at least one of the radiator, the engine oil heat exchanger, and the heater core.

System and method for adjusting coolant flow through a cooling system of a vehicle to increase a warming rate of a transmission

A vapor purge system for an engine, includes a purge valve having a housing including an input port in communication with a purge canister and including an output port in communication with an intake system component defining a first bore portion receiving the output port with a first seal member disposed therebetween. The intake system component includes a second bore portion receiving a housing portion of the purge valve with a second seal member disposed therebetween. The first and second seal members are spaced such that when the housing is pulled away from the intake system component and the first seal member is out of engagement between the first bore and the output port, the second seal member can remain in engagement so that a diagnostic module can diagnose detachment of the purge valve from the intake system before any hydrocarbon vapor can be released into the atmosphere.

The inlet control valve is operated to a closed state by an electrical signal applied to the inlet control valve. The electrical signal includes a pull-in portion of the electrical signal that is applied to the inlet control valve having a pull-in time interval that is varied based on the fuel pressure. By varying the pull-in time interval to control fuel pressure, electrical energy consumed and acoustic noise generated by the fuel delivery system are reduced.

A diagnostic system for monitoring catalyst performance in an exhaust system comprises a plurality of treatment devices catalytically treating an exhaust gas stream, and a plurality of gas sensors for monitoring the catalyst performance of the treatment devices to determine when sulfur poisoning occurs. An on-board diagnostic system receives signals from the gas sensors, and, based upon response time differentials between sensors, determines whether the treatment devices are experiencing sulfur poisoning.
